After the RX 7900 GRE appeared in the EU and UK, AMD is reportedly officially launching the card in the US later this month for $549. Pitting it as a hedge against a possible RX 7900 XT sales slump, Team Red is allegedly preparing the GPU to get rid of Navi 31 stock at sub-$600 pricing.

AMD launched the RX 7900 GRE in China in July 2023. The board uses a cutdown Navi 31 GPU featuring 5,120 cores, a boost clock of 2.25 GHz, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, and a 260 W TDP. Coming in at $549, the RX 7900 GRE is reportedly debuting in the US in a few days.

The report comes to us via Moore’s Law Is Dead who alleges that the RX 7900 GRE is dropping in the US market on February 27 with reviews set to drop a day earlier. Furthermore, the board will seemingly have a low supply at launch which could improve if reception is good. MLID claims that ASRock, XFX, and PowerColor will have models ready to go out at launch.

So, why is AMD launching the RX 7900 GRE outside of China when you can already find the RX 7800 XT which is not far behind in terms of performance for cheaper? For instance, the RX 7800 XT is available for less than $500 on Amazon at the time of writing.

Per MLID, the answer lies in AMD trying to ensure that it can offload Navi 31 stock if the more expensive RX 7900 XT faces headwinds against the RTX 4070 SUPER (Available on Amazon) and the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER. One look at the performance profile of the RX 7900 GRE and we can see the value advantage that the GPU should enjoy over the $599 RTX 4070 SUPER.

Per our database, the RX 7900 GRE is about 12% ahead of the RTX 4070 SUPER when we combine the results of the 3DMark 11, Fire Strike, and TimeSpy. Additionally, Team Red’s GPU also has 4 GB more VRAM, a wider 256-bit memory bus, and more bandwidth.

Put simply, with a $50 lower price and better performance, the RX 7900 GRE should make for quite a solid mid-range option against the RTX 4070 SUPER.
