Avenir Telecom has revealed its first clamshell foldable smartphone, which it hopes to eventually sell as the Energizer Ultimate U660S. The foldable arrives after Avenir Telecom announced the renewal of its Energizer licensing agreement until the end of the decade.

An increasing number of smartphone OEMs are returning or entering the clamshell foldable market. This month alone, Huawei has released the Pocket 2 in China, while ZTE has unveiled an equivalent that will be sold as the Libero Flip and Nubia Flip 5G in others, both with Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipsets. Additionally, Avenir Telecom has created the Energizer Ultimate U660S that it has exhibited at MWC 2024.

For context, Avenir Telecom has been selling Energizer-branded smartphones under licence since 2010, which it recently renewed until 2030. At any rate, Avenir Telecom claims that the Energizer Ultimate U660S has a 6.67-inch FHD+ internal display intersected by a 25 MP camera. Moreover, the Ultimate U660S is said to contain 64 MP and 8 MP rear-facing cameras, which sit next to what appears to be a tiny cover display. Reportedly, a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset underpins the handset, as does 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

In other words, the Energizer Ultimate U660S will be one of the least powerful clamshell foldables around. Specifically, approximately a 25% gap exists between the Helio G99 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 in our benchmark database. Supposedly, Avenir Telecom will begin selling the Energizer Ultimate U660S in November 2024 for €449.99, thereby likely undercutting the Nubia Flip 5G that ZTE intends to sell for $599.

However, the former has a much older design, with a distinct gap existing between its two halves when closed. We should stress that Avenir Telecom has been here before with the Power Max P8100S. While the company showcased the device during MWC 2019 alongside various other smartphones, it was subsequently cancelled despite Avenir Telecom claiming it was targeting a November 2019 release.
