The Intel version comes with lower TDP processors from the Core Ultra-U series but gets a Thunderbolt 4 connector, while the AMD version features more powerful Ryzen 8040HS APUs yet remains stuck with USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connectors.

To allow users to choose their preferred AI-enhanced processors, this year’s 14-inch Envy x360 2-in-1 notebook from HP is receiving processor upgrades from both AMD and Intel. The processor selection is, however, skewed in AMD’s favor this time around with higher TDP models like the Ryzen 5 8640HS and the Ryzen 7 8840HS, while the Intel options include only 15 W Core Ultra 5 125U and Core Ultra 7 155U models. Due to the lower TDP, the Intel processors also feature less powerful iGPUs with 4 cores, whereas the AMD ones come with 8 to 12 cores. The NPUs, on the other hand, should provide similar AI performance on both platforms.

As a sort of compensation for the lower-TDP processors, the Intel platform is the only one to feature a Thunderbolt 4 connector. AMD is still stuck with USB 3.2 Gen 2, regrettably. Both versions feature 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 (one with charge), HDMI 2.1 video out and audio jack, and the Intel variants come with one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 in addition to the Thunderbolt 4 port. AMD instead gets two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2.

Otherwise, the specs are mostly the same for the two platforms. There is support for either 16 or 32 GB LPDDR5-6400 RAM and between 512 GB and 2 TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage. Display options are all touch-enabled and include an OLED panel with 2880 x 1800 resolution, 400 nit and 120 Hz refresh, as well as two IPS 1920 x 1200 panels (one with 400 not and one with 300 nit for longer battery life).

The fingerprint sensor seems to have been replaced by the 5 MP webcam with IR sensor on most of HP’s 2024 models, and the Envy x360 is no exception. Both platforms feature Wi-Fi 7 + BT 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6E + BT 5.3 options, as well as a 59 Wh battery with 65 W USB-C charging, which brings the total system weight to 3.1 lbs (1.4 kg), with a 0.7-inch (1.7 cm) profile.

Availability for both the Intel and AMD versions is scheduled for March. Starting prices are very close ($960 Intel / $950 AMD), and this is mostly due to the Thunderbolt 4 port on the Intel models.
