Artificial intelligence is now setting the tone everywhere, including modems and wireless systems. In the next generation of Qualcomm's smartphone mobile platforms, the Snapdragon X80 modem RF system presented today at Mobile World Congress 2024 and the FastConnect 7900 radio system on a chip will be responsible for improved connectivity, with AI wielding the baton.

AI played a major role for the first time in the Snapdragon X70 5G modem, which can often be found as part of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Platform on current smartphone flagships from the Android universe. Qualcomm also announced the next generation of its 5G modem RF systems at this year's Mobile World Congress - Snapdragon X80. Also new is FastConnect 7900, a compact integrated wireless system for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth and, for the first time, Ultrawideband (UWB).

Fast Connect 7900

For the first time, artificial intelligence is used to optimize the performance of a Wi-Fi 7 radio system, which also combines Bluetooth and Ultrawideband in a 6nm chip. In that case, an AI should be able to optimize the data throughput depending on the application, for example, to reduce latency in gaming or to save energy.

Better energy efficiency and more modern Bluetooth

This sounds like the kind of quality-of-service function typically found in routers, but according to Qualcomm, it works completely independently of the router in question. Thanks to UWB integration, application areas such as finding objects more easily, indoor navigation, or digital keys (e.g. for cars) are also covered. In terms of Bluetooth, BT 5.4 including LE Audio is now supported, which indicates the availability of Auracast. Qualcomm claims a 40% improvement in energy efficiency compared to its first system, FastConnect 7800. Qualcomm states a launch in the second half of 2024, presumably together with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in the fall.

Qualcomm also has news outside of your LAN. The Snapdragon X80 modem also benefits from optimized performance thanks to AI, and smartphones with six antennas and 6-carrier aggregation for sub-6Ghz bands are supported for the first time. This enables download rates of up to 10 Gbps and a maximum upload rate of 3.5 Gbps.

Snapdragon Satellite is back

AI also plays an important role in the Snapdragon X80 modem, here in the form of the Qualcomm 5G AI Suite in Generation 3. Artificial intelligence helps with multi-antenna management and, as with the FastConnect 7900, controls latency and energy consumption depending on requirements. The use of AI also reduces connection times and ensures better location. Qualcomm also mentions the topic of satellite connectivity again after "Snapdragon Satellite" has unfortunately not been a success with smartphone manufacturers to date. The Snapdragon X80 modem will also be available in the second half of 2024.
