HP Envy 17 tested: A large multimedia laptop with GeForce RTX and 4K display
A fast Alder Lake processor from Intel with 10 cores and a clock speed up to 4.7 GHz, 32 GB of RAM, a dedicated GeForce RTX graphics card, and a 4K display - the basic specs of the HP Envy 17-cr0079ng sound like a more than solid multimedia laptop. In our test, the device was also able to show its good sides in various areas, but also gave some reasons for complaint.
The latter goes mainly toward the highly reflective display. While a large 17-inch laptop isn't predestined for outdoor use anyways, the display of this device completely prevents it. Even indoors, using the laptop is made more difficult by very visible reflections of light sources, even if the 4K display otherwise looks very good in terms of the measurements.
The Intel Core i7-1255U processor of the 12th generation used here delivers a good performance. In addition, with 32 GB of DDR4 it can make use of a fairly large amount of working memory. With the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2050 Laptop GPU with 4 GB GDDR6, the graphics card is not only slightly older, but it is also an entry-level card. While it delivers sufficient performance for FHD gaming with many games, it hits its limits with more modern games.
In terms of the battery life, power consumption, and the with 1-TB sufficiently large but also fairly slow SSD, the HP Envy 17-cr0079ng surely doesn't win any prizes. A positive aspect among others are the two Thunderbolt 4 ports, even though both of them are placed on the right side. Overall, we would have liked more highlights in the test for the MSRP of almost 2,000 Euros (~$2210).
