Best Buy is trying to one-up Amazon’s Prime Day deals with some enticing discounts on select laptops. One of the best deals at Best Buy right now appears to be an HP Omen gaming laptop powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7 6800H APU coupled with the Radeon RX 6650M dGPU. This model just dropped US$200 from its previous US$999.99 low recorded at the end of June.
It also packs 16 GB of DDR5-4800 CL40 RAM together with a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, plus users can add another SSD on the vacant M.2 slot. Our test reveals that the Radeon RX 6650M is 5 to 10% faster than Nvidia’s RTX 3060 as far as rasterization goes, but the ray tracing performance is at least 15% lower. Of course, users may activate FSR to alleviate this shortcoming wherever possible.
On the display side, we find a 16.1-inch 1080p IPS panel with 144 Hz FreeSync and 100% sRGB color gamut. Average brightness recorded in our test was 361.3 cd/m².
Port selection is quite robust, with 3x USB-A 3.0 and 2x USB-C 3.1 Gen 2, an HDMI 2.1 video out, audio jack, GbE jack and an SD card reader. There is also a MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E + BT 5.2 card for wireless connectivity.
Despite AMD’s energy efficiency track record with mobile-grade processors and graphics, this particular Advantage Edition seems to be a bit more power hungry in full load, so the smaller battery is drained in a bit over an hour. The system is also noisier at 54 db in Performance mode.
