Unwanted RX 7900 could see muted launch as RX 7800 and RX 7700 specifications and release dates leak

The RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT launched with MSRPs of US$999 and US$899 respectively.
The RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT launched with MSRPs of US$999 and US$899 respectively.
It appears that the Navi 32-based RX 7800 and the RX 7700 might be on the horizon as new information from Moore’s Law Is Dead suggests that AMD is getting ready to release the cards in a couple of months. The leaker has also claimed that the RX 7900 based on the cut-down Navi 31 GPU could see an unusual launch with constrained supply.

Since releasing the first RDNA 3 GPUs in December 2022, AMD has launched only one new card, the RX 7600. The company is still to take the wraps off the bulk of its mid-range offerings possibly the RX 7700/XT, the RX 7800/XT, and the RX 7900. Curiously, Team Red has yet to disclose any details regarding these boards including the possible SKUs, MSRPs, and release dates. Now, a new report from Moore’s Law Is Dead has tried to shed more light on the situation.

Before discussing the new leak, it is pertinent to mention that the leaker has no idea what the new cards will be named. So to minimize confusion, Tom calls the cut-down Navi 31-based board the RX 7900 while the RX 7800, and the RX 7700 represent the full and cut-down Navi 32-based cards respectively. As Tom mentions, take these names with caution as AMD can brand the final products quite differently.

First up, one of Tom’s AIB sources claims that the 70 Compute Units (CU) 16 GB GPU, which Tom refers to as the RX 7900, is an “abnormal product” and is unlikely to get a “normal release”. The source suggests a launch akin to the RX 6700 10 GB that had a fairly quiet release.

Interestingly, the source also mentions that the RX 7900 has “horrible margins” because of which the AIB is unwilling to sell the board.

Moving on, the Navi 32 GPU (the RX 7800 and the RX 7700) appears to be ready for launch as an AMD source alleged that the “Navi 32 drivers have effectively been finished for a while now” and the GPU is already in the hands of “several people”. Citing AMD management’s usual practice of controlling exposure to contain leaks, the source claimed the situation to be “highly unusual”.

Furthermore, the Navi 32 is apparently “ready to go” but AMD could be waiting for Navi 21 stock to clear up before releasing the new GPUs.

RX 7900, RX 7800, and RX 7700 specifications

Courtesy of one of his AMD insiders, MLID has also shared specifications for the Navi 32 and Navi 31-based boards.

First up, AMD is reportedly preparing two Navi 32-based SKUs:

  • A “Top N32” GPU with 60 CU, a 260 W Total Board Power (TBP), and 16 GB of memory running at 19.5 Gbps.
  • A “Cut N32” with 48 or 54 CU, a 245 W TBP, and 12 GB of 19.5 Gbps VRAM.

Moving on to the cut-down Navi 31 featured inside a Navi 32 package, Tom’s source alleged a 260 W TBP, 70 CU, and 16 GB of VRAM.

When it comes to release dates, AMD is supposedly planning to announce the two Navi 32 cards, the RX 7800 and the RX 7700, at Gamescom 2023 which is scheduled to run from August 23 to August 27. The boards could be available to buy in September.

For the Navi 31 RX 7900, the source mentioned to Tom that the “70 CU card is unlikely to launch anytime soon”. However, if the card does come to the market, it could have a muted release with short supply.

Finally, there is a possibility that AMD could only launch the RX 7800 and the RX 7700 and closes out the RDNA 3 generation.
