RTX 4070-rivaling RX 7800 XT could feature cut-down RX 7900 XTX GPU as Navi 32-based RX 7800 reportedly launches in Q3

After the release of the top-end RX 7900 XT/XTX and the lower-end RX 7600, the stage is now set for AMD to launch mid-priced cards like the RX 7800 XT. The rumor mill has it that the RX 7800 XT could use a Navi 32 GPU but the latest report from Moore’s Law Is Dead suggests that the board could feature a cut-down Navi 31 chip inside a Navi 32 package.

There has been a multitude of leaks and rumors discussing the Radeon RX 7800 XT. From the RX 7800 non-XT and the mobile RX 7800M XT to the Radeon Pro W7800 that was used to simulate the performance of an RX 7800 XT, we have a good idea of what to expect from the card when it launches. Essentially, we could see the RX 7800 XT pack 60 to 70 CUs and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory with performance to rival the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070.

Tom from Moore’s Law Is Dead now alleges that the RX 7800 XT could feature the Navi 31 GPU instead of the Navi 32 chip. To substantiate this claim, the leaker presents a picture of the supposed Navi 32 package accommodating a Navi 31 GPU with six MCDs two of which could be disabled in the final designs. The GPU package reportedly measures 40x40 mm.

An MLID source from inside AMD confirmed that the planned RX 7800 XT/RX 7900 board with 70 CU and 16 GB of memory “can use a 40x40 Navi 32-like package”. The source also maintained that the RX 7800 XT’s launch was contingent on Navi 21 stock drying up and enough supply of the Navi 31 bottom yields.

Now the question becomes, why would AMD want to use a Navi 31 GCD inside a Navi 32 package? The answer seems to be the cost effectiveness of the solution. Packaging a Navi 31 GCD this way allows the company to use Navi 31 GPUs not suitable for the RX 7900 XT/XTX to power the RX 7800 XT. The solution also appears to benefit AIBs who don't have to design new boards as they can reuse Navi 32 designs that they might already have prepared.

Furthermore, one of Tom’s AIB sources shared that the AIB was informed by AMD to “expect a 70 CU N31 RX 7800 XT, a 60 CU N32 RX 7800, and a 48 CU N32 RX 7700 XT”. The source also mentioned that AMD seems unsure about its plans regarding these GPUs, but the company will have to act fast as the Navi 21 stock (RX 6800/XT, the RX 6900X, and the RX 6950 XT) is “nearly 100% sold through”.

Another AIB source reported that the Navi 32 GPU is expected to launch in Q3 inside the RX 7800. The source also suggested that the AIB doesn’t know what GPU the RX 7800 XT/RX 7900 will end up using as AMD hasn’t confirmed anything.

Finally, another AMD source claimed that Team Red is planning to launch two Navi 32-powered cards in September: one with a 260 W TDP and 16 GB of VRAM and one with a lower 240 W TDP and 12 GB of memory.

Put simply, we may see the RX 7800 XT feature a Navi 31 chip with 70 CU and 16 GB of VRAM while the RX 7800 could make use of the Navi 32 GPU. As it is with all leaks, these claims may or may not materialize. So, take these reports with a grain of salt.
