NVIDIA is just days away from officially releasing the GeForce RTX 4060, its cheapest RTX 40 series card to date. The company has now published official benchmark results for its AD106-based graphics card, positioning it more as a GeForce GTX 1060 or GeForce RTX 2060 replacement than one to which RTX 3060 owners should upgrade.

NVIDIA is set to release the GeForce RTX 4060 on June 29, the cheapest option in its RTX 40 product stack. Launching for US$299 and €329 in the Eurozone, the GeForce RTX 4060 has big shoes to fill, with NVIDIA's 60 series cards continuing to dominate Steam hardware surveys, even the ageing GeForce GTX 1060. NVIDIA has now shared official benchmarks that paint its latest 60 series graphics card in a particularly favourable light.

According to the manufacturer, the GeForce RTX 4060 is 14x more powerful than the GeForce GTX 1060. By contrast, the new graphics card surpasses the GeForce RTX 2060 by 2.3x and its predecessor by just 0.7x. It is worth noting that NVIDIA arrived at this figure with DLSS 3 frame generation enabled though, and does not represent rasterisation improvements. For reference, disabling DLSS 3 drops the performance advantage over the GeForce GTX 1060 to 8x, while eliminating frame generation technology altogether closes the gap to 4x.

Also, DLSS benefits are only seen in games that support the technology. Thus, performance gains are even slimmer in unoptimised games. Seemingly, the GeForce RTX 4060 delivers just 20% performance boosts over the GeForce RTX 3060 where DLSS is unavailable, particularly in games that take advantage of the latter's 4 GB additional VRAM.

Arguably, the conservative improvement in rasterisation performance should not come as a surprise. Based on NVIDIA's specifications, the GeForce RTX 4060 delivers a mere 15.3% increase in nominal computing power over the GeForce RTX 3060, represented as 15 TFLOPs vs 13 TFLOPs, respectively. Still, the GeForce RTX 4060 achieves these performance improvements while consuming up to 115 W, a 32% decrease from its predecessor's 170 W TDP.
