AMD has announced three new Zen 4-based Phoenix processors for thin and light laptops. The Ryzen 9 7940HS, Ryzen 7 7840HS, and Ryzen 5 7650HS will power a wide range of products from Asus, Razer, HP and Acer later this year.

AMD has finally lifted the covers off the Ryzen 7040HS series of processors a day after AMD unveiled its Ryzen Pro chips for laptops and desktops. They'll feature a base TDP of 35-54 Watts, and will primarily be found in thin and light laptops. The upcoming Razer Blade 14 2023 will be one of the first laptops to show off Phoenix HS's power.

For now, the Ryzen 7040HS lineup has three models, the flagship Ryzen 9 7940HS (8c, 16t, 24 MB cache, 5.2/4.0 GHz), Ryzen 7 7840HS (8c, 16t, 24 MB cache, 5.1/3.8 GHz) and Ryzen 5 7540HS (6c, 12t, 24 MB cache, 5.0/4.3 GHz ). Depending on the model, one will get a RDNA 3-based Radeon 780M (Ryzen 9 7940HS/Ryzen 7 7840HS) or Radeon 760M (Ryzen 5 7640HS) iGPU. The former is 12-core part with a 2.8 GHz boost clock while the latter cuts it down to 8 cores and 2.6 GHz.

Our benchmarks (and AMD's own test results) show the Radeon 780M can play modern games at respectable framerates with tempered expectations, and it'll be interesting to see how it fares alongside the Ryzen 7040HS series. Even the Radeon 760M looks promising, as well. Most Phoenix HS laptops will opt for a dGPU of some sort, and it'll be up to handhelds from ONEXPLAYER, Aya Neo and others to show off the Radeon iGPUs' performance. All three models will come with AMD's XDNA AI accelerator, which, for now, only works with a handful of features on Windows 11.

Performance-wise, AMD compares the Ryzen 9 7940HS to the Intel Core i9-13900H, similar to what it did with its Pro variant. In applications such as PCMark, 3DMark, 3DSMax and Lame MP3, its outperforms the Raptor Lake part by 6% to 41%.

When paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, both SKUs come close to each other, with the Core i9-13900H faring better in Cyberpunk 2077. However, it loses out in others, and not by all that much. Furthermore, the games AMD tested seem to be dated. One will get a better idea when it is put through newer, more resource-intensive titles.

AMD compares the Ryzen 9 7940HS against Apple's M2 Pro, too. As expected, the results are about as impressive as one would think, with the Phoenix HS flagship besting Apple silicon in Adobe Photoshop by a paltry 11%.

Other than the Razer Blade 14 2023, AMD Ryzen 7040HS chips will power a slew of laptops such as the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, ROG Flow X13, Asus TUF A16, HP Omen 16, Lenovo Legion Slim, and Acer Nitro 16, all of which will be unveiled later in the year.
