Minisforum teases UM780 / 790 Pro mini PCs with AMD Ryzen 9 7040HS Phoenix APUs

A few weeks ago, Minisforum was asking its Discord community to provide some spec suggestions for a mini PC that would feature AMD’s Ryzen 9 7940H “Phoenix” APU. GMK’s leaked slides were also basically confirming that Minisforum is planning to release Ryzen 7040 mini PC, but no specific release dates were provided. The latest tweet from Minisforum posted yesterday now clearly states that the company is preparing to launch Venus UM780 and UM 790 Pro models, yet the exact APUs are still not specified. The tweet also features a teaser image that reveals the port selection.

According to sources close to Chinese site ITHome, the Minisforum UM780 would be powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840HS APU, while the UM790 Pro variant would be equipped with the Ryzen 9 7940HS. Both APUs feature eight Zen 4 cores / 16 threads and integrate the powerful Radeon 780M GPU with 12 RDNA 3 CUs. GMK announced that it is using the Ryzen 7040H APUs instead of the HS ones, but this would most likely be linked to availability since there is no notable difference between the two variants when it comes to mini PC integration.

Compared to the existing UM690 mini PC with the Ryzen 9 6900HX, the port selection on the Ryzen 7040 models offer the same rear ports, including 2x HDMI 2.1, 4x USB-A and a 2.5 GbE jack. However, the front panel on the new mini PCs now features two USB4 ports instead of one plus the usual audio jack.

As far as availability is concerned, the UM780 / 790 Pro models could launch some time in June or July. Judging by current prices for the UM690 model, the UM790 Pro may start at ~US$800, whereas the UM780 could cost US$100 less.
