The APEX 15 / 17 models as well as a new 16-inch CORE laptop are scheduled to receive the AMD Phoenix treatment with a Ryzen 7 7840HS APU later this summer. However, even though the integrated Radeon 780M GPU is already good enough for 1080p gaming, XMG cannot eliminate the dGPU options.

Shortly after the announcement of the APEX 15 / 17 models upgraded with AMD’s Ryzen 7030HS processors featuring refreshed Zen 3 cores, XMG released an updated 2023 roadmap showing APEX and CORE laptops powered by the acclaimed Zen 4 Phoenix chips. These are expected to launch in just a few months but there is a big caveat.

The upcoming XMG APEX 15 / 17 and CORE 16 models will benefit from the Ryzen 7 7840HS treatment, yet XMG will not offer them without a dGPU. Thus, the APEX models will include mandatory RTX 4050 / 4060 options, and the CORE 16 will integrate RTX 4060 / 4070 options, even though the integrated Radeon 780M GPU is already powerful enough for most 1080p games. As explained in the roadmap blog post, XMG cannot scrap the RTX 4000 dGPUs “due to a variety of factors, including available R&D resources and questions of consistent availability across the supply chain.” Since XMG is not as big as say Lenovo or Dell, the German company has a relatively smaller sales volume which cannot accommodate laptops without a dGPU in order to provide a good return on investment. Nevertheless, XMG is already discussing with AMD and partners regarding possible laptop models with no dGPU option for the coming years.

As far as specs go, the APEX and CORE models scheduled for Q3 this year will feature more display options, including a WQHD IPS, plus faster DDR5 memory, possibly DDR5-5200. Of course, the more powerful AMD Phoenix processors will slightly bump the final price. Just like with the NEO 16, the CORE series will get a new 16-inch size featuring a bigger 99 Wh battery that can provide more power for the RTX 4070 dGPU. However, unlike the NEO series, CORE laptops do not support the external OASIS water cooler.
