The first laptops featuring AMD’s highly-anticipated Phoenix mobile processors are finally available for purchase from major OEMs. The problem is, unlike mini PC makers that can offer systems powered by just the APU, laptop OEMs force customers to opt for a dGPU on top of the higher-end APU that already does a good job at 1080p gaming. Lenovo is trying to make this as easy on the wallet as possible by adding the Ryzen 7040 APUs on its budget LOQ laptops, so if you do not want to pay well over US$1,000, the LOQ 15 powered by a Ryzen 7 7840HS and an RTX 4050 is probably the best deal right now at just US$1,019.99.

Deals like this usually start with the base specs of just 8 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB storage. However, Lenovo is generous this time around and throws in 16 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. Granted, the RTX 4050 barely feels like an upgrade over the RTX 3060 from a few years ago, yet it at least offers DLSS 3 compatibility. The actual value here is offered by the inclusion of the Ryzen 7 7840HS that comes with 8 cores / 16 threads, special XDNA cores for AI workloads and an integrated RDNA3 Radeon 780M GPU that alone is enough for a smooth 1080p gaming experience.

As expected for a budget solution, the screen is limited to 45% NTSC color gamut. The 15.6-inch IPS panel comes with 144 Hz refresh rate and 350 nit typical peak brightness. It also integrates a 1080p webcam with dual array mic and privacy shutter.

Port selection includes 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 9DP and PD 140 W), 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, 1 USB 2.0, HDMI 2.1 video out, audio jack and GbE jack. Wireless connectivity is provided through a Wi-Fi 6 + BT 5.1 card. Lenovo is offering a full-size keyboard with normal-size arrow keys, but the backlight is limited to white.
