Lenovo is releasing an updated 2023 workstation portfolio. While the T series based P14s and P16s receive a upgrade to the Ampere based RTX A500, ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 and P16 Gen 2 will feature Ada Lovelace chips. Apart from the new GPUs, there are new screen options, an increased amount of RAM and PCIe 5 SSDs for the P16.

The 2023 ThinkPad lineup did not feature a single new mobile workstation model thus far. Neither at CES nor at MWC was a ThinkPad of the P series announced. Today, Lenovo is changing the situation, the whole ThinkPad P series portfolio is updated.

Most of these models are simple updates of existing ThinkPad models. This category includes the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4, the ThinkPad P16s Gen 2, the ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 and the new ThinkPad P16 Gen 2. There are no design changes here.

One natural change is the move from Intel Alder Lake to Intel Raptor Lake. All four receive the newest CPUs of the 13th Core i generation. In the case of the P14s G4 and P16s G2, they feature U15 and U28 CPUs. The P1 G6 will use H45 processors, and the traditional workstation ThinkPad P16 G2 is going to be based on the most powerful HX55 chips. Not announced were AMD variants, though we do expect both the P14s and P16s to feature AMD chips eventually. P1 and P16 will likely remain Intel exclusives.

In terms of the GPUs, there are news as well. ThinkPad P16 G2 and ThinkPad P1 G6 are going to use the new Nvidia RTX 5000 Ada as their fastest GPU option. The P1 Gen 6 will also be offered with the GeForce RTX 4090 as an option. A comparably small update is happening for the entry level models P14s and P16s: Instead of the Turing based Nvidia T550, both will feature the Nvidia RTX A500, an Ampere based chip.

The RAM is also an area of change. The ThinkPad P16 G2 will feature up to 192 GB of DDR5-RAM, the maximum for the old model was 128 GB. Likewise, the ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 can be configured with 96 instead of 64 GB of RAM. P14s and P16s will be available with up to 64 GB, up from 48 GB on their predecessors. Both will feature either LPDDR5X or DDR5 memory. Only the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 will be offered with PCIe Gen 5 SSDs for the first time.

In terms of the screen, Lenovo is also shipping some upgrades. P14s and P16s will be get optional OLED variants, the P16 G2 meanwhile will be offered with a new 800 cd/m² LCD. At the same time, the WQXGA option for the P1 and P16 is boosted from 400 to 500 cd/m², and will feature 165 Hz refresh rate on the P16 for the first time as well.
