Price-performance stunner. HP's Omen series of affordable gaming notebooks has been on the market for many years. We took a closer look at their current 15-inch Coffee Lake gaming notebook - is it good enough to enter our budget gaming notebook top 10 list?

Without a full-fledged review, we won’t say for certain that this is a safe buy, but from our limited experience with it, we’re inclined to say yes. The only question that would remain is if it can accommodate 16GB of RAM. Because if the answer is yes, then the 2018 HP Omen 15 is a gaming notebook that’s pretty complete. It’s more portable than before, and its weaknesses as we perceive it can be solved, albeit with more money.

HP Omen 15-dc0015ng
For those who fancy a gaming laptop with cool design, one need not to look further because the HP Omen 15 is one of the best choices in the present market. It may resemble its predecessor a lot but its specifications are updated in accordance to standards that are to be expected these days. A laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-875OH and supported by an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU will definitely give users the all-around performance they need to start their awesome gaming experience. The structure of the HP Omen 15 consists of a combination of metal and plastic fused with brushed aluminum or carbon fiber finish to finalize a very stylish and strong-looking laptop, thus making the HP Omen 15 laptop model all the more portable, compact and full of potential. An amazing view presented by a 144 Hz G-SYNC capable IPS panel and a four-zone RGB backlit keyboard entails to the fact that users can enjoy their gaming experience even in the dark thanks to the colorful backlit keyboard. Not to mention that the HP Omen 15 has a 15.6-inch screen display and a compact frame that weighs around 2.5 kg. It would not come off as surprising that a stylish overall design would beg the question whether the HP Omen 15 lives up to current gaming standards. The backlit keyboard is much appreciated as it enables the user to enjoy their gaming in the dark but there is no per-key RGB-lighting or complex gaming software to further enhances the overall gameplay experience. Speaking of display and gaming capabilities, the main attraction point of the HP Omen 15 may just as well be its 144 Hz G-SYNC IPS panel, which runs at a native rate of 144 Hz by default. It also features micro-edge technology, which entails to the fact that it offers trimmed bezels while also being able deliver rich colors, bright visuals and decent viewing angles. As for this laptop's gaming capability, with GeForce GTX 1070 GPU with 8 GB of VRAM, some games run well and retain fantastic visual graphics. For a gaming laptop, the HP Omen 15 runs rather quietly during playtime. The sound of the fan or white noise generated by the device does not overpower your playtime. Furthermore, the HP Omen 15 also supports fast charging with a potential to receive 50 percent of power when charged for just 45 minutes. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

There is no doubt that one of the best features of the HP Omen 15 2018 is one of its display options that our configuration has. We are talking about the fast 144 Hz panel with NVIDIA G-Sync support. This panel is available even for lower-end configurations with a Core i5 and GTX 1050 although without the G-Sync functionality.

HP Omen 15-dc0096nd
The HP Omen 15-dc0096nd is a high-performance gaming laptop. It is a mid-range price tag gaming laptop that cuts a little corner around the design of the laptop but still features a powerful processor. The Omen 15 case is made of plastic, unlike many other laptops which features aluminium or metal case. Fortunately, the plastic case feels sturdy with minimal flex. The case of the laptop is full black with faux carbon fiber. Opening the laptop, a user can see a layer of aluminium around keyboard and trackpad, giving it a more premium feel to the touch of hands. HP applied NVIDIA's Max-Q design philosophy, which results in the lightweight 2.58 kg (5.68 pounds) build. It is lighter than many other full-fledged gaming laptops in the same range. The Omen 15’s 15.6-inch IPS panel is stunning with wide viewing angles, vibrant colors, and a luminous 314 nits of brightness. The display also has a fast 120 Hz refresh rate, which is essential for gaming laptops. Besides that, the display also includes Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, which synchronizes the refresh rate of the GPU and panel to provide smooth gameplay free of tearing or stuttering. As for specifications, it has the combination of the fastest Intel i7 Hexa Core processor, the graphics card with 6 GB of VRAM, 16 GB of RAM, a Solid-State-Drive (SSD) of 256 GB and a 1 TB hard drive for storage purpose. It is a balanced laptop featuring a powerful processor as well as lots of memory and storage. Windows 10 Home is installed in the storage disk. The keyboard and trackpad are draped with aluminium for a more premium touch, and it definitely delivers a solid experience as well. The keys on the keyboard are crisp and clicky to press on. HP claims it offers "26-key rollover anti-ghosting," which means it can accept that many key commands at once without mistaking any inputs. The red keyboard backlight is very useful in seeing the letters on the keyboard because it is difficult to see the letters in a slightly darker environment. As for input/output ports, the Omen 15 has full-size HDMI and mini DisplayPort connections for video output. Besides that, it also includes three USB 3.0 connections, a USB-C socket with optional Thunderbolt connectivity, an SD card reader and an Ethernet jack. Conclusively, the HP Omen 15 is a gaming laptop with great features. Besides the case material, the hardware of the laptop is great. It is certainly a laptop that can deliver performance while running programs and applications and handling the latest games. The Omen 15 might not be as glamorous as the ROGs and the Alienwares but it definitely does the job. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

The Omen 15 may look like its predecessor, but HP has overhauled its internals. A hexa-core CPU and cutting-edge GPU should make better use of the 144 Hz panel than the hardware in the last Omen 15 we reviewed did, although single-channel RAM may hinder performance slightly. Read on to find out what the Core i7-8750H and RTX 2070 Max-Q bring to the table.

In other words, you’re looking at a $500 premium to be able to bring your gaming with you and play anywhere. The question then becomes if gaming on the go is your goal. If that’s what you want to do, then the HP Omen 15 is among the best gaming laptops you can buy. If you don’t want to game on the go, look elsewhere. There are plenty of high-performance, extremely portable laptops if you’re looking to do work, and a nearly infinite number of ways to build a custom PC for gaming. Or, you can buy a pre-built rig and still come out ahead.

HP Omen 15-dc1020ng
HP’s Omen series is an intriguing lineup to say the least. The Omen series is the company's very own brand of gaming laptops to be featured into the scene. HP’s Omen series of affordable and inexpensive gaming laptop models has been circulating around the market for many years, and hereinafter, the HP Omen 15-dc1020ng is their latest official release to be added into the long-running lineup of predominant sovereignty. The HP Omen 15-dc1020ng plugs itself as an entry-level gaming laptop. It has a 15.6-inch, matte Full HD display screen with a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, which is the universally agreed standard for an optimal gaming experience. Despite meeting the benchmark of standards in the construction of a gaming laptop, it seems to be the case that HP has completely shirked off on the concern of the HP Omen 15-dc1020ng’s brightness level. The apparent downside to the HP Omen 15-dc1020ng as a gaming laptop is the confusingly dim display, which cannot be brightened no further than a maximum of 231.7 nits. For avid gamers and the like, in-game losses tend to also be commonly associated to brightness settings of various degree. Certainly, a dimly lit in-game environment can cost a potential victory, which ultimately dampens collaborative efforts, thus affecting gameplay performance for the user. With that being said, this capped level of brightness can be a huge cause of concern for unsuspecting users. Despite the apparent downside of the HP Omen 15-dc1020ng on the brightness category, this laptop model is still capable of running all current game titles rather smoothly on its internal display thanks to the quad-core Intel Core i5 9300H microprocessor. The Intel Core i5 9300H operates on a standard base clock of 2.4 GHz and is capable of achieving up to 4 GHz in total upon the activation of Turbo Mode. These statistics are considered to be an impressive feat due to the designation of nature for the HP Omen 15-dc1020ng as a mere entry-level gaming laptop. The physical appearance of the HP Omen 15-dc1020ng is entirely open for debate. While the keys on the keyboard can be lit up with colorful backlights, the questionable double hinge design of the HP Omen 15-dc1020ng, whereby the hinges are conjoined with the keyboard to the monitor, replicates a peripheral resemblance to a common desktop unit. The double hinge design is extremely susceptible to breakage or damage if not always handled with the utmost care. A traumatic impact caused from an accidental slip may or may not completely break if not all, one-half of the hinge and can detach the screen from the keyboard. Hence, long-time gamers or people with interests of the geek culture tend to avoid this kind of double hinge design from becoming their main gaming console of choice. Thanks to its Core i5-9300H CPU and GeForce GTX 1650 GPU the Omen 15 is capable of running all current games smoothly on its matte 15.6-inch FHD IPS display, and as a bonus it comes with an NVMe SSD and a decent battery life. If only the display was not so dim.

The HP Omen 15 is a great midtier gaming laptop. For $1,149, you get a system that packs a punch on both the gaming and overall performance. Not only can the Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU play AAA titles, it can play them well, and the display and audio ain't too shabby, either. If you're looking for a bit more endurance, and save a bit of cash, you'll want to check out the $849 Dell G3 15. But if you're looking for an affordable gaming laptop that doesn't cut too many corners, the HP Omen is for you.

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
79.95%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
