Whether the feature is called Pixel Glow or HiLight, one thing is certain: the Pixel 11 series will feature RGB LED lighting that is discreetly integrated into the camera module. The code of a Google app has already revealed some of the features of this LED lighting ahead of time.

If previous rumors are accurate, the Google Pixel 11 series will feature few new features aside from the Tensor G6 ARM chip. The design, too, changes only slightly, apart from the colors. Compared to the Pixel 10 Pro ($915 on Amazon), however, there is still one exciting new feature – the LED flash in the camera module is being expanded to include RGB lighting.

According to rumors, this feature is called either "Pixel Glow" or "HiLight." So far, we could only speculate about the function of this LED. It’s likely that the RGB LEDs will provide visual feedback during conversations with Google’s Gemini AI assistant. 9to5Google has now found evidence of some functions of this HiLight lighting in the code of the Google Contacts app, version 4.85. According to these findings, it’s possible to assign a specific color to contacts so that the LED glows in that exact color when the corresponding contact calls or sends a message.

The available colors are blue, cyan, green, orange, pink, purple, turquoise, white, and yellow. This feature makes it possible to recognize who is calling even when the smartphone is lying face down on a table. It is still unclear whether HiLight will also be integrated into other Google apps, and whether third-party apps will be able to access this feature. Further details regarding the functionality of the RGB LED lighting are expected to be officially confirmed by the launch event on August 12 at the latest.
