Development of the anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 sequel accelerated earlier in 2025. Given how many AAA games see longer production cycles, the latest rumor about its release date may not be surprising. Still, the title may debut sooner if CD Projekt Red weren’t putting so much emphasis on a multiplayer mode.
Cyberpunk 2 looks like a massive sequel
An update from Polish investment house Noble Securities provides new insight about the project. As translated on Reddit, the studio currently has 135 employees working on the game. That number should double over the next two years as the budget expands.
More notably, the report continues, “The desire to integrate multiplayer mode into the production prompted us to extend the production time beyond the state resulting from the progress of work on the benchmark W4.” CD Projekt Red reportedly has Q4 2030 slated as the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel release date. The timeframe would coincide with the tenth anniversary of the original open-world action RPG.
The studio previously warned players that the game may not arrive until 2030-31. Whether day-one multiplayer is worth any extra wait is being debated by fans. After a problematic launch, Cyberpunk 2077 redeemed itself as an engaging single-player experience. Nevertheless, mods, including CyberMP that implement PvP gameplay, have become popular unofficial downloads.
With other triumphs like The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red is known for story-driven solo adventures. However, it has yet to successfully expand on a title like Rockstar Games has with GTA Online. That said, the studio considered multiplayer support for the first game before shelving the idea. This time, the potential for added revenue from micro transactions may be too alluring to ignore.
Cyberpunk traditionalists shouldn’t panic, as the sequel will likely offer a deep narrative and improved NPC and enemy AI. Keanu Reeves has also stated his desire to return as Johnny Silverhand.
