CD Projekt Red CFO comments on microtransactions in The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2
In addition to frequent performance problems, it was above all the numerous microtransactions that led to Dragon's Dogma 2 being sharply criticized by the gaming community despite good test ratings. If players do not have the corresponding items, they have to spend money on functions that are normally standard in a single-player game - including character customization or fast travel.
Capcom has already apologized for the numerous microtransactions in Dragon's Dogma 2 and announced in the recently published roadmap at least one change that should eliminate the need for in-game purchases for character customization in the future. Of course, there is also the question of how other publishers will deal with microtransactions in single-player games in the future. Many players are likely to be looking towards CD Projekt Red in particular - the publisher that has two highly anticipated games in the pipeline with The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2.
In an interview with Stockwatch CD Projekt CFO Piotr Nielubowicz was asked whether there will be microtransactions in future games. The answer:
"Although we don't see a place for microtransactions in single-player games, we don't rule out using them for multiplayer projects in the future."
In multiplayer games, where in-game purchases have long been established, CD Projekt does not rule out their use. In single-player games, however, Nielubowicz sees no room for microtransactions, which should mean that in The Witcher 4, Cyberpunk 2 and other future single-player games from the publisher, all basic functions will be usable without having to spend money on them.
Is CD Projekt working on multiplayer games?
There is currently no indication that CD Projekt is planning a multiplayer project. The question of which multiplayer games the publisher could use microtransactions in therefore remains open. However, it cannot be ruled out that Projekt Hadar, which CD Projekt has been working on since 2021, could be a multiplayer title. All we know so far is that it will be a completely new brand with fundamental differences to Cyberpunk and The Witcher.
