Amazon cancels Resident Evil Requiem Deluxe Edition pre-orders weeks before release date

Many collectors believed they had secured a copy of Capcom’s anticipated survival horror game. Unfortunately, with the February 27th Resident Evil Requiem release date approaching, these buyers are now scrambling. Posters are flooding Reddit with reports that Amazon has cancelled pre-orders of the Deluxe Edition.
The sought-after version ships on a physical disc or Game-Key Card for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch 2. Gamers will also receive a limited-edition lenticular card and bonus items, including costumes and weapon skins. Packaged in a steelbook, the purchase is more likely to survive wear and tear.
Some buyers have seen Amazon erase their Resident Evil Requiem Deluxe Edition pre-orders with no recourse. Frustratingly, they were not given an option to wait for more quantities to arrive. Other fans now have an updated shipping date of mid-March, several weeks after the title’s release date. In the U.S., most competing stores are also out of stock. Perhaps to quell the outrage, Amazon has since listed an Exclusive Edition with poster for $69.99.
Amazon is unreliable for game pre-orders
Redditors note that this is not the first case of the massive retailer disappointing buyers. The company is in the habit of taking more pre-orders for physical tiles than it can fulfill. It restocked the Resident Evil Requiem Deluxe Edition a second time, even after delaying orders for the initial round.
Scalpers may also play a part in depleting inventory. Completed eBay listings show individuals flipping the $89.99 item for as much as $190. These sellers often employ bots to monitor product pages and use various tricks to circumvent order limits.
Regardless of who is responsible, Capcom’s horror game is generating massive interest and dominating wishlists. Reports suggest that retail performance has beaten expectations, boosting the publisher’s stock. The return of Leon Kennedy has likely led to a surge in sales, as he prepares to split gameplay hours with Grace Ashcroft. A day-one release on a Nintendo console, which didn’t happen with Resident Evil Village, is also a factor.
