Leak: Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max will have "the most powerful telephoto lens in a smartphone"
Currently, the "strongest telephoto lens in a smartphone" is more likely to be associated with Chinese flagships such as the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, the Vivo X200 Ultra, or the Oppo Find X8 Ultra with its dual periscope solution. Given the strong competition, it may come as a surprise that Apple, of all companies, may soon have an iPhone with the best telephoto lens on the smartphone market. This is exactly what was recently stated by a prominent leaker on Chinese network Weibo, as shown in the screenshot below.
What could be behind the iPhone 17 Pro Max telephoto lens
However, the rumor mill regarding the iPhone 17 Pro telephoto lens has been buzzing long well before this Weibo post. A few weeks ago, another leaker caused a stir in suggesting that a radically new telephoto solution had been developed for the new Pro iPhones, based on an iPhone 17 commercial allegedly in production in Slovenia. Specifically, the leaker spoke of 8x zoom and even a real optical zoom solution with variable focal lengths, similar to what is currently installed in the Sony Xperia 1 VII.
A sensor upgrade for both iPhone 17 Pro models is relatively certain, which will also feature a 48-MP sensor behind the telephoto lens in the future. The jump from 12 MP in the iPhone 16 Pro Max to 48 MP would at least enable a sensor crop, making a 10x zoom possible without too much effort. But this alone is unlikely to be enough to earn the title of "Best Telephoto" in a smartphone. While the leaker has correctly revealed a few details in advance in the past, he hasn't always been infallible.
