The popular YouTuber Kyle Hansen (Bitwit) has posted a new video showing how he managed to build a respectable gaming PC on a lower budget than the MSRP for Nvidia’s unloved GeForce RTX 4080. The rig features an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X as CPU and Radeon RX 6800 XT as GPU, and there was even enough in the budget for 32 GB of RAM.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 hasn’t been shown much love by the gaming community, with retailers apparently struggling to shift their stock (although one happy side effect is that scalpers on eBay will also be ruing a purchase). The card was released with an MSRP of US$1,199, which is US$400 shy of the seemingly vastly superior RTX 4090 unit. With unspectacular specifications that have generally failed to impress the tech world, the RTX 4080 may soon witness a massive price cut to help boost sales, while one YouTuber has suggested that viewers should just build a whole gaming PC for around the same money instead.

In a video deeply lampooning Nvidia and the RTX 4080, Hansen puts together a decent build based on the aforementioned Ryzen 5 5600X and an Asus TUF Radeon RX 6800 XT part. The rest of the specs can be seen in a screenshot below, but it is clear to see that with the addition of 32 GB RAM and the great value for money MSI B550-A PRO motherboard that this is a more than capable gaming desktop PC on show. The channel host reports a cost of US$1,198 for the build, while VideoCardz even managed to shake up the part list a bit and include a Radeon RX 6900 XT board from XFX instead. The GeForce RTX 4080 is naturally superior in FPS production than either of those rivals from 2020, but AMD will soon have its upcoming RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX available to tempt shoppers away from Nvidia.

In a Forza Horizon 5 gaming comparison (2560 x 1440, ultra settings), the AMD-based rig produced an average of 110 FPS and a 1% low of 83 FPS, which are more than playable rates. However, the GeForce RTX 4080 produced 0 FPS, as the presenter decided to save money by not building a PC for the Nvidia card to be tested in. In fact, he even went so far as to suitably burn Nvidia by joking that he had been sent an RTX 4080 card to be reviewed along with a fire extinguisher, replacement cables, burn relief spray, cup noodles (because the price of the card is so high the buyer can only afford inexpensive food), and a rather insulting photo hinting at Team Green’s attitude in regard to releasing the over-priced RTX 4080.
