NVIDIA releases fix for blank screen issues when booting GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4090
The GeForce RTX 4080 has only just arrived, with the GeForce RTX 4090 having recently reached customers and reviewers too. However, NVIDIA has already sought to release a driver update for optimising GeForce RTX 4080 performance, as well as a new firmware for both graphics cards. According to NVIDIA, the latter addresses a bug that could not be fixed with another driver update.
Specifically, the new firmware is designed to fix the GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4090 from displaying blank screens as the system boots, an issue that occurs before the display driver becomes active. Thankfully, NVIDIA has simplified the process of applying a firmware update with v1.2 of its GPU UEFI Firmware Update Tool.
In a forum post, NVIDIA explains that the Firmware Update Tool detects whether the most recent firmware update is already applied before providing the option of doing so. Incidentally, NVIDIA warns that there a no pending OS updates before applying the firmware update for either the GeForce RTX 4080 or the GeForce RTX 4090. Moreover, NVIDIA states that you could attempt the following if you cannot run the tool:
- Ensure you are using the latest SBIOS from your motherboard vendor
- Change boot mode from UEFI to Legacy/CSM
- Boot using an alternate graphics source (secondary card or integrated graphics)
