Nvidia has so far launched two desktop cards based on the Ada Lovelace architecture — the RTX 4090 and the RTX 4080 — with lower SKUs slated to launch in the coming weeks. It is inevitable that the company will also launch mobile variants of these cards. Usually, this happens during CES time and now there is some preliminary information about what the Ada mobile lineup would be.
Wccftech claims to have accessed insider information about the upcoming RTX 4000 mobile lineup along with some performance numbers. According to the publication, we may get to see GPUs such as the RTX 4080 Ti (GN21-X11), RTX 4080 (GN21-X9), RTX 4070 (GN21-X6), RTX 4060 (GN21-X4), and the RTX 4050 (GN21-X2).
Ampere never saw the RTX 3090 coming to mobile — for understandable reasons — so it might be a bit far-fetched to expect AD102 dies in laptops. However, it is possible that the purported RTX 4080 Ti might as well be the RTX 4090, similar to what we had seen in previous leaks. Nvidia might even use a different nomenclature altogether, but the codenames for the GPUs should still be valid — we saw these codenames leak several months ago along with their corresponding PCIe IDs.
Along with the RTX 4000 mobile GPU names, we also seem to have Time Spy scores for these laptop GPUs. It is not exactly clear whether these are Time Spy total scores or from the Graphics test alone, but we see the so-called RTX 4080 Ti mobile leading the RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU by 30%, which is a decent uplift. The more interesting part of the graph is the 15% lead of the RTX 4070 mobile over the RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU, which is significant if these numbers are true.
It will be interesting to see how Nvidia will spec these mobile Ada GPUs. We've seen before that Ada mobile SKUs based on AD103 and AD104 are likely to be capped at a 175 W power limit. Ada is no doubt more power-efficient than Ampere, but Nvidia will allow OEMs to configure these laptop GPUs in a range of TGPs. Also, the company is likely to tout the benefits of new RT technologies and DLSS 3 frame generation in order to be able to achieve high frame rates at 4K compared to native performance.
Nvidia will most likely introduce Ada mobile GPUs at CES 2023. This is also the time when Intel and AMD will announce their mobile Raptor Lake-H and Ryzen 7000H series CPUs, respectively so we have a lot to look out for.
