Xiaomi has quietly started selling one of its latest compact tablets internationally. To recap, the company introduced the Redmi Pad 2 SE earlier this month in China alongside the more powerful Redmi K Pad 2. Shortly afterwards, various sources noticed that Xiaomi was preparing to launch the Redmi Pad 2 SE globally under multiple names.
While the Poco Pad C1 remains unofficial for now, Xiaomi has begun selling the Redmi Pad 2 9.7 and Redmi Pad 2 9.7 4G across Southeast Asia as smaller alternatives to the Redmi Pad 2 (curr. $173 on Amazon). Specifically, the company has listed the tablet in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, although the latter is restricted to a Wi-Fi-only version for now.
As far as we can tell, the Redmi Pad 2 9.7 carries over all the hardware from the existing Redmi Pad 2 SE. For instance, Xiaomi mentions a Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 2 chipset, as well as a 7,600 mAh battery that supports 18 W wired charging. The new tablet also features a 120 Hz IPS display that resolves at 2,048 x 1,280 with a 16:10 aspect ratio and at up to 600 nits peak brightness in outdoor mode.
Additionally, Xiaomi has installed 8 MP rear-facing and 5 MP front-facing cameras in a housing that measures 227.5 x 148.9 x 7.4 mm and weighs 406 g. The Redmi Pad 2 9.7 starts at THB 4,999 (~$155) in Thailand with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of expandable storage. Meanwhile, Xiaomi charges SGD 229 (~$179) and THB 5,699 (~$176) for 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.
Currently, a 4G variant runs to SGD 269 (~$211) with the same memory configuration. Xiaomi only lists placeholder pricing in Malaysia for now. The new tablet appears to have already reached some Singaporean stores too, based on a recent Reddit post. It is unclear when Xiaomi will begin offering the tablet in more markets yet, though.
