The Xiaomi 16 Pro Max will be the true successor to the Xiaomi 15 Pro, as the regular Xiaomi 16 Pro is likely to shrink somewhat in size and compete with the successor to the compact 6.3-inch Xiaomi 15. That, at least, is the gist of the Xiaomi 16 lineup leaks of the past few weeks. Both Digital Chat Station (on Weibo) and Kartikey Singh (on X) recently provided new information about the new Leica camera flagship, which is expected to launch with the with Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 in China at the end of September.
Leica camera with new SmartSens 590 sensor
In a recent Weibo post (see screenshot below), the Chinese leaker emphasises that the new Xiaomi 16 Pro Max will feature a new, ultra-dynamic 50-MP SmartSens 590 sensor, which at 1/1.28 inches will be slightly larger than the 1/1.31-inch Omnivision OVX9000 in the Xiaomi 15 Pro. We'll get to the leaker's other hints in a moment, but first we did some research to see if we could find more details about this sensor. On the Chinese SmartSens homepage, there is already a new model with the product number SC595XS in the SmartClarity XL Pro series that matches this information. It supports HDR and offers a pixel size of 1.22 um, but further specs are not yet known due to the lack of a linked data sheet.
Larger periscope telephoto lens from Samsung
Digital Chat Station also mentions a new, more dynamic 50-MP 1/1.95-inch sensor behind the new periscope telephoto lens, which, according to Kartikey Singh (see tweet below), is Samsung's ISOCELL GN8. Here, too, we checked the South Korean company's product data sheet to see if this could be true. Indeed, the ISOCELL GN8 is a 1/1.95-inch sensor that offers a pixel size of 0.8 um and supports many HDR features such as Smart ISO Pro and Dual Slope Gain. Compared to the 1/2.76-inch ISOCELL JN5 of its predecessor, this would also be a substantial upgrade.
Huge battery in the Xiaomi 16 Pro Max7
Last but not least, Digital Chat Station also mentioned other specs in its July 29 post, such as a 7,500 mAh battery, a huge upgrade from the 6,100 mAh battery in the Xiaomi 15 Pro. This is described as the maximum possible capacity, so it may not end up in the final model. The 6.8-inch 2K AMOLED display is said to have extremely thin bezels and particularly low power consumption thanks to LIPO technology.
