The Pura 80 Pro impressively demonstrates that Huawei can still build good smartphones in 2025 despite ongoing trade restrictions. The camera stands out in particular with its 1-inch main sensor. However, the price is likely to be a deal-breaker for many potential buyers.

Despite the lack of Google services and 5G, Huawei is constantly trying to bring attractive smartphones to the European market. The Android 12-based Pura 80 Pro offers an appealing user experience in everyday life, even if it requires a fair amount of compromise on the aforementioned features.

The performance of the Kirin 9020 SoC is rock solid, but it's not nearly enough to challenge other devices in the same price segment. The HiSilicon Maleoon 920 GPU in particular disappoints with weak scores in our graphics benchmark tests. The comparatively short battery life is also a negative factor, which is incomprehensible from our point of view, as this is an area where Huawei could excel. Especially since the Pura 80 Pro is anything but light and compact.

Android smartphone with variable aperture camera

The Pura 80 Pro's main camera impresses across the board in our review. The 50 MP sensor in 1-inch format features optical image stabilization and a variable aperture ranging from f/1.6 to f/4.0. As a result, the Huawei phone produces excellent sharpness in our test shots and a high dynamic range in daylight and low light conditions.

The very good image quality is offset by shortcomings in the video functions, and the ultra-wide-angle and telephoto cameras also lag significantly behind in terms of quality. You can view all test photos here

For a recommended retail price of over $1,000, there are currently many alternatives on the market, such as the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, OnePlus 15 or Galaxy S25+, which have a clear advantage in terms of software and connectivity. The Huawei Pura 80 Pro is therefore more suitable for Huawei fans who are willing to compromise.
