The foldable smartphone market is barely recognisable since the advent of the original Galaxy Fold. On the one hand, the likes of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold7 (curr. $1,649 on Amazon) are much thinner and sturdier than their predecessors. On the other hand, Huawei and Samsung have now dipped their toes into the world of tri-folding smartphones too.
However, a visual compromise continues to exist across all foldables, including clamshells. Namely, a visible crease exists on all models, which distinguishes foldables from their candybar counterparts. During CES 2026, Samsung Display exhibited several experimental panels, including one with no visible crease whatsoever.
According to ZDNet Korea, this new technology is already mature enough to enter mass production later this year. Apparently, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is currently positioned as the most likely candidate, despite rumours of the iPhone Fold implementing comparable display technology. Allegedly, Apple prevented Samsung Display from showcasing the display technology destined for its foldable ahead of time.
To achieve this Samsung Display is said to have modified the optical clear adhesive (OCA) layer it uses to bond display components. Reportedly, a more malleable OCA layer minimises creases, which should reduce the effect in future foldables. Samsung Electronics is expected to finalise display plans later this quarter.
