Huawei's rise to the top of smartphone camera flagships began in 2016 with the Huawei P9. The company then became very popular and a real threat to Samsung with the P30 and the P30 Pro. The latter introduced a night mode that was impressive for its time, Huawei's signature RYYB sensor technology, and one of the first decent periscope telephoto cameras that are now the de facto industry standard in better-equipped smartphones.
These hallmarks will be commemorated in the run-up to the Pura 80 launch event next week in the form of a video on Chinese network Weibo. At the end of the video, there will also be a brief glimpse of the new XImage camera system of the Pura 80 series, once again with a variable aperture and—not yet confirmed—with the first 1-inch sensor developed by Huawei and a dual-focus periscope telephoto lens.
Pura 80 Ultra as the new zoom camera world champion?
One of the focal points of the Pura 80 series is definitely the zoom camera, as the second teaser video from China shows. Bringing distant objects closer, especially in low-light conditions such as in a concert hall, is a feature advertised by many manufacturers; Huawei may well once again set new standards here with the Pura 80 Ultra, as the promo video below promises. Digital Chat Station also recently highlighted the Pura 80 Ultra's "switchable telephoto lens" on Weibo. According to one of his other posts, the Pro model is getting a 24mm main camera with a variable aperture and an 89mm (or 3.7x) telephoto lens, although Huawei will apparently forgo 3D facial recognition in 2025.
