The new Dell G16 reviewed: An affordable gamer with a huge power supply
We have just completed our review of the Dell G1 with an i7-13650HX, an RTX 4060 at 140 watts and a 1,600p display. This configuration can currently be had for just under US$1,400 and alternatively, you can get the system in a stronger configuration for a little more, namely the i9-13900HX and the RTX 4070.
In the case of our test device, customers get a bit of a bulky, large gaming laptop with one deciding advantage: Thanks to its size, it even remains quieter while gaming compared to a lot of its competitors—without its gaming performance dipping below what is expected from the installed hardware.
Of course, there are some compromises you'll have to make due to its low price, too. Its "old" 720p webcam might not scare away every gamer and apart from that, its disadvantages are mostly small annoyances rather than real reasons to avoid purchasing.
We already mentioned that the G16 is quite bulky and heavy. Incidentally, its 330-watt power supply is just as bulky and heavy, as it alone weighs 1.5 kg—while our test system only consumes 185 watts when gaming and short peaks of 255 watts under maximum stress! The power supply that's far too big for the i7 and the RTX 4060 is likely used so Dell doesn't have to ship out different power supplies with each of the two configurations. Unfortunately, the power connection isn't terribly secure either, and it has a tendency to slowly slip out when the laptop moves.
There are still a few minor downsides to the laptop's low price and good performance, and our detailed review of the Dell G16 (2024) can provide further information on these.
