Teclast T50HD tablet review - The affordable 11-inch allrounder with Android 14

Good entertainment.

For a very inexpensive 11-inch tablet, the Teclast T50HD comes with a solid selection of features. Aside from Android 14, it also comes with 256 GB storage, a bright IPS display, DRM Widevine L1 and even dual-SIM support with 4G. Our review will reveal whether this introductory tablet is worth recommending.
Teclast T50HD

The Chinese manufacturer Teclast has a large number of affordable tablets on sale. None of which offer high-end performance or crazy features. In turn, you get everything that a tablet might need for everyday use. The same can be said for the Teclast T50HD which can already be found for under US$150 online.

The 11-inch T50HD features an IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. Adding to this is 256 GB UFS storage, an 8000-mAh battery, 4G support as well as Android 14—the latest version of Google's operating system.

The T50HD's Unisoc T606 is fast enough for multimedia, surfing the web and playing simple games. An extra is its DRM Widevine L1 certification which ensures high-resolution streaming on Netflix and co.

Case - The Teclast T50HD with an aluminum case

The T50HD's aluminium case looks great with its rounded edges and you wouldn't be able to tell how inexpensive the Teclast tablet is. Its bezels are around 1 cm in width which gives the 11-inch device quite a modern look while making sure that you don't accidentally activate the touchscreen when you are holding it.

The T50HD doesn't feature an IP certification and if you really want to, you can quite easily dent and twist the 7.9-mm-thick case. Even so, the tablet is stable enough for everyday use and at 500 grams, it isn't too heavy, meaning you can get away with holding it in one hand for quite a while.

On the flip side, we don't really like how the manufacturer has preinstalled the screen protector on the tablet. As it is relatively soft, you can barely avoid collecting the odd scratch or two—this happened quite quickly during our test even though we handled the tablet carefully.

The Teclast T50HD only comes in one color with a matte gray back cover. The most eye-catching design element on the back is the camera module with a high-shine finish and its "AI Dual Camera" lettering. This looks neat and suggests advanced technologies—unfortunately this is clearly more appearance than reality, as the camera isn't capable of delivering anything more than snapshot quality.

Connectivity - 256 GB storage and dual SIM

The T50HD is equipped with a generous amount of RAM and storage, namely 6 GB and 256 GB respectively. Teclast even speaks of up to 14 GB RAM, however, the additional 8 GB don't bring much, as they are provided via a swap file in the internal storage, which runs significantly slower than the RAM. The RAM expansion is active by default, but can be switched off at any time via the Android settings.

The T50HD's USB-C port runs with USB-2.0 speeds and supports USB-OTG, which lets you connect USB drives to the tablet, for example. You can also expand its internal storage via the microSD slot which supports cards up to 1 TB in size. You can also insert a SIM card directly next to it. If you decide to go without a microSD card, then you can actually even insert two SIM cards at once. The device also has a 3.5-mm jack for audio devices.

microSD card reader

In combination with our Angelbird AV Pro V60 reference card, the card reader achieved very good data throughput values for its price class. During the sequential read and write tests, it was as quick as the card reader inside the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+. During the copying test, it came ahead of most of the comparison devices, achieving 41.2 MByte/s. Only the Samsung tablet was faster in this aspect.

Software - Android 14 and DRM Widevine L1

Not only does the latest version of Android (Android 14) run on the Teclast tablet, it also doesn't come preinstalled with third-party sponsored apps, meaning you can make use of the available storage very effectively. The T50HD supports DRM Widevine L1, so you can stream high-resolution content from streaming platforms such as Netflix.

At the time of testing at the beginning of May, the latest Android security patch was from 5th February, so not entirely up-to-date anymore. Even when asking Teclast directly, the manufacturer couldn't reveal to us for how long or how frequently the T50HD will be supplied with updates.

Communication and GNSS - Stable WiFi 5, poor GPS

The Teclast T50HD supports WiFi 5 as its fastest WLAN standard and over short distances, it can also communicate via Bluetooth 5.0. It doesn't support NFC.

When connected to our Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 reference router, the T50HD delivered good and stable WLAN transfer rates. With a peak value of 358 MBit/s, it almost makes use of the standard's maximum possible data throughput. Amongst the comparison devices, only the Telekom T Tablet is a little faster.

You can use 4G to access the web on the go on the T50HD. It supports the 4G bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 34, 38, 39, 40 and 41, assuring good reception within the EU, where this test was carried out.

The T50HD determines its location via the satellite navigation services GPS, Glonass, Galileo and Beidou, all in single-band mode. However, it doesn't locate quickly and indoors, we couldn't get a result. Outside, the tablet managed to locate us with an accuracy of 7 meters.

As our practical test showed, the tablet is only partly suitable for navigation purposes. In contrast to the Garmin Venu 2, the fitness smartwatch that we took with us to compare, the T50HD recorded our 4-kilometer long route very imprecisely. It took shortcuts through buildings, sometimes jumped an entire street further or it assumed that we were in the river instead of on the bridge going over it.

Cameras - Only snapshot quality

Photo taken using selfie camera
Photo taken using selfie camera

The T50HD's selfie camera has an 8-MP resolution and doesn't take particularly bright or sharp photos. Even so, its picture quality is still good enough for video calls. It allows a maximum resolution of 720p at 30 frames per second.

The tablet's main camera features a resolution of 13 MP and, the same as with the selfie camera, is supported by an LED flash. Viewers will see two lenses but the bottom one is just used as a depth sensor and has a resolution of 0.3 MP.

In good lighting conditions, the main camera takes usable photos, but they don't offer much more than snapshot quality. The photos look less dynamic and have a slightly anemic look to them, almost as if they were taken during a solar eclipse. There is little image detail, homogeneous areas are washed out and image noise creeps into darker areas of the image. Poor lighting conditions then completely overwhelm the camera.

The main camera can record video at up to 1080p and 30 frames per second. Its picture quality when recording video is comparable with its photography quality. In turn, the camera adjusts to changing lighting conditions relatively speedily. The autofocus also does its job pretty reliably.

Subsequently, we took a closer look at the main camera's picture quality in controlled lighting conditions. In optimum lighting conditions, the main camera captured colors accurately but the test chart appeared blurry. In 1 lux of residual lighting, the ColorChecker color card and the test chart almost entirely disappeared into the darkness.

Accessories and warranty - The Teclast T50HD with a 10-watt power supply

The Teclast T50HD comes with a 10-watt power supply (5V/2A), a USB cable (Type-A to Type-C), a SIM tool, a short instruction manual as well as a warranty card. The manufacturer also offers a folio case for the tablet via its website.

The Teclast T50HD is protected by a 12-month warranty.

Input devices & operation - No fingerprint sensor, but 2D facial recognition

The Teclast tablet's touchscreen reacts quickly and precisely to inputs. As is typical for the class, it features a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

The T50HD isn't fitted with a fingerprint sensor. However, you can unlock the tablet biometrically via 2D facial recognition which also works well in low-light surroundings. Further ways to lock the device include patterns, PINs and passwords.

Subpixels

The T50HD's 11-inch display has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, resulting in an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a pixel density of 207 PPI. During our APL18 test (even distribution of light and dark image areas), the screen reached a maximum luminance of 528 cd/m², meaning it was the brightest device within the comparison field.

We didn't measure any PWM on the IPS display. As a result, people who react sensitively to screen flickering can purchase this tablet without any hesitations.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8437 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

Measurement series with fixed zoom level and different brightness settings

The IPS display boasts contrast-rich depiction (1515:1) and it also performed well during the tests with the other image parameters. Its results weren't totally ideal but still, they are fine for this price range. This is also due to the fact its overall color deviations are low and shouldn't be noticeable in everyday use.

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
18.9 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 9.1 ms rise
↘ 9.8 ms fall
The screen shows good response rates in our tests, but may be too slow for competitive gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 39 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is similar to the average of all tested devices (20.7 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
36.5 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 19.1 ms rise
↘ 17.4 ms fall
The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.165 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 50 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (32.3 ms).

Even on bright days, content remains legible on the viewing-angle-stable IPS panel. In contrast, direct sunlight poses some issues for the device, as strong reflections oftentimes hinder your view. In shaded locations, on the other hand, the display can be read from pretty comfortably.

Performance - The Teclast T50HD with a Unisoc T606

The Unisoc T606 inside the Teclast T50HD is a familiar friend also used in many other tablets produced by the manufacturer. The eight-core SoC, which was presented toward the end of 2019, is no performance miracle, as stutters or small delays occur from time to time during everyday use. On the other hand, the Teclast tablet is fast enough to surf the web and watch videos. Games can run smoothly, too, if the graphics calculations aren't too demanding.

As its synthetic benchmark results show, the Teclast T50HD can hold its own against its similarly priced competitors. Its performance is similar to that of the Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE, which is equipped with the Snapdragon 680 4G. The Telekom T Tablet (MediaTek Dimensity 700) and the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ (Snapdragon 695 5G), on the other hand, keep the T50HD at a clearer distance.

The Unisoc T606 contains the ARM Mali-G57 MP1 graphics unit, which gives the T50HD solid graphics performance when running applications. However, games present the GPU with major challenges. The T-Rex benchmark from GFXBench shows that 30 frames per second and thus a reasonably smooth display are by no means guaranteed in even graphically simple games.

Games - Rarely smooth-running

We use Gamebench to test how well tablets can run games. Unfortunately, the Teclast T50HD refused to provide data to our test app, so we can't provide any frame rates.

Still, the T50HD's gaming performance can also be assessed well without exact FPS figures. Demanding games such as Genshin Impact and PUBG Mobile can be played in the lowest graphics setting, but they don't really run smoothly. The low-performance ARM Mali-G57 MP1 graphics chip only manages this in graphically simple games, such as Dead Trigger 2 or Subway Surfers.

Temperature

During operation, the T50HD remains cool. After our 1-hour stress test using the Burnout benchmark, we measured a maximum surface temperature of 89.6° F (32° C). The Wild Life stress tests from 3DMark showed that the tablet can practically always access its full performance—even under continuous load.

Speakers

Stereo speakers sit inside the Teclast tablet and they can reach up to 80.4 dB(A) without sounding distorted at all. Their sound is fine, however, it is missing bass. In turn, the mids and highs are relatively balanced.

External audio devices can be connected to the tablet via its 3.5 mm jack or Bluetooth 5.0. The Bluetooth codecs available are SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, LDAC, LC3 and Opus.

Power management - Good battery life, but slow charging

Power consumption

The Teclast T50HD is quite energy-efficient compared to the competition. It only requires 1.8 watts in idle mode and its power consumption increases to a moderate 2.8 watts under load.

The 8000 mAh battery can be charged at a maximum of 10 watts via the supplied power adapter. With other power supply units, such as a 65-watt power supply unit from Ugreen that we used, we were unable to elicit a higher charging power from the tablet.

You have to be patient when charging the tablet. In our test, it took 5 hours and 5 minutes for the empty battery to reach 100 per cent again. In practice, it is therefore probably best to charge the tablet overnight.

Runtimes

Good battery life is one of the highlights of the T50HD. Simulated web surfing only resulted in just under 15 hours, while playing an HD video in a continuous loop even lasted a little over 16 hours. However, the Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE can get even longer runtimes out of its 8000 mAh battery.

The Teclast T50HD is a good introductory tablet whose appearance doesn't give away its low price. Its aluminum case is built well and only weighs 500 grams, which is super lightweight for an 11-inch tablet.

The T50HD also scores points thanks to its 1920 x 1200 pixel IPS display that boasts great contrasts and relatively balanced color depiction. Further highlights include its good runtimes and large 256 GB storage that also delivered fast speeds during our test. In addition, the tablet is 4G-ready with dual-SIM support, has stereo speakers and a DRM Widevine L1 certification.

The Teclast T50HD is an affordable but still good multimedia tablet with a bright IPS display, a generous amount of storage, long runtimes and mobile internet via 4G.

Due to its outdated Unisoc T606, the T50HD unfortunately only delivers limited system performance. Although it is enough to surf the web and watch videos, you can't do much more. Even so, the SoC does manage to run simple games smoothly, but the Teclast tablet is by no means a gaming machine. One weakness is the device's unclear update delivery. While Android 14 runs on the T50HD, only the manufacturer knows how many updates it will receive—but it's keeping this secret from us.

Alternatives to the Teclast T50HD include the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+, the Telekom T Tablet and the Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE.

Price and availability

At the time or writing, the Teclast T50HD can only be found via very few online shops. You can currently find it on AliExpress for US$111.04. You can alternatively check out Teclast's available tablets via its Amazon storefront.
