Valve may already have stacks of the Steam Machine waiting in warehouses. An insider noticed that the company has been importing shipments of “Game Consoles.” It recently hinted that, despite concerns about a high price, an update on the mini PC's release date would come soon.

Even if Valve is secretive, import records sometimes spoil announcements. Gamers saw a similar pattern unfold with the Steam Controller. The company received a large shipment of the accessory before revealing its launch plans and price. Now, more recent activity suggests a Steam Machine release date update could be imminent.

Investigating Valve's shipping records

Brad Lynch, a regular source of leaks, monitors available shipping data. He informed his social media followers that “Valve is receiving a ton of ‘Game Consoles’ these past couple weeks in their USA distribution warehouse.”

Although some databases require subscriptions for full access, NBD provides limited free access. Readers can see several imports for a “Game Console” to Valve’s U.S. location, with the latest on April 23rd. In fact, as far back as February, rumors circulated about these curious records.

Lynch initially avoided discussing the developments. However, he now explains that “quantities, and other factors, looked more like Steam Machine/Frame-related things.” The insider later clarified that most of the devices are more likely mini PCs rather than the Frame VR headset.

Another possibility is that the company is replenishing the scarce Steam Deck OLED. The component and memory shortage has also strained supplies of the gaming handheld. Still, Joshua Keith notes that the history of restocks for the system doesn’t fit with the recent import activity.

Is the Steam Machine about to launch?

Reports emerged that the manufacturer was struggling to keep the Steam Machine price reasonable. As a result, fans have wondered whether it may not surface for months after the Steam Controller, if at all. On the other hand, in an IGN interview, Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais teased that it could arrive much sooner.

Addressing the Steam Machine release date, Griffais told the website, “We are definitely expecting to roll out some news soon about that.” With other hurdles cleared, he said it’s “really just about the logistics of getting it into users’ hands.”

Shipping logistics are likely a major part of the prep work for launching the mini PC. If the bulk of the imports is for the console alternative, the manufacturer may have found a workaround for the memory shortage.
