Valve has made its $99 Steam Controller official with an actual release date and early reviews have started coming in. Gamers Nexus has tested various aspects of the controller and found it to be quite impressive.

With Valve’s confirmation of the release date and pricing for the Steam Controller, reviews have started to surface. Gamers Nexus went in-depth with the device and has put it through the paces, including latency testing, functionality, and even a teardown. First impressions look quite promising, owing to its latency results and repairability.

Starting with the latency tests (lower is better), Gamers Nexus used an Nvidia LDAT to measure the end-to-end latency and saw impressive results in both wired and wireless modes. When plugged in, the Steam Controller registered an average of 19ms, while in wireless mode using the included puck, it registered 21.6ms. This was lower than the Xbox One Controller (22.6ms), but the difference in real-world gaming would be imperceptible. Using Bluetooth, the Steam Controller jumped to 37.3ms with a greater standard deviation compared to the other results. Notably, the PlayStation DualSense controller wasn't in the mix.

Coming to battery life, the team believes that the 35+ hour claim from Valve is valid since they found that with just the joysticks engaged, it lasted for 73 hours. They also tested with just the rumble engaged and found it lasted well over 24 hours. Of course, real-world gaming would involve many more inputs as well as the vibration motors working heavily, but a 35+ hour runtime should still be possible.

Since the controller supports connecting to multiple pucks as well as Bluetooth connectivity, there are button combination shortcuts that allow switching between the modes. Gamers Nexus also tore down the controller and found that it is “easily serviceable,” and that Valve will work with iFixit to sell replacement parts after launch. A full teardown video will be released later.

For enthusiasts, all the buttons and inputs are customizable on the Steam Controller, and there will be preset profiles for easier personalization as well.

Valve has priced the Steam Controller at $99, and it will be available for purchase starting May 4.
