Valve Steam Machine release date and price announcement reportedly coming soon

After a Steam Controller review leaked with pricing, a Steam Machine release date update may not be far off. According to Mike Straw of Insider Gaming, “Valve is getting closer to confirming everything.” The hesitancy to announce launch timing has apparently stemmed from a debate over the mini PC’s price.
Steam Machine price speculation
In a new article, Straw explains that the company has “been going back and forth internally on pricing and whether they would be willing to take a loss on the cost, at least in the short term.” That’s a surprise to some followers, since Valve earlier stated the system would not be subsidized like a console. Instead, it would offer buyers value, but at a cost of a gaming PC with similar specs.
The problem for the manufacturer is that since its November 2025 reveal, the memory shortage has intensified. Because of high storage and DDR5 RAM prices, building an equivalent alternative is more challenging. Fans anticipated a Steam Machine release date early in the year, before the crisis prompted a change to “sometime in 2026”.
Even though Valve has resisted the console label, comparisons haven’t stopped. Aided by the dual trackpads of the Steam Controller, it brings a massive library of games into living rooms. Some curious PlayStation and Xbox loyalists have been anxious for news about the system.
Consoles are no longer such an affordable solution
The now more expensive PS5 and PS5 Pro make a loftier Steam Machine price more palatable. Still, in some ways, its performance could fall short of Sony’s $900 flagship hardware. One of the main concerns with the Linux-powered cube’s capabilities is its 8GB of VRAM. Recent releases like Pragmata have forced some compromises on GPUs with the same memory capacity, even at 1440p.
Valve claims that most games on its marketplace should run at 4K/60fps on the mini PC. Like the PS5 Pro, it will rely on upscaling from lower resolutions, but use an older version of FSR. If the company decides on a similar asking price, how well its specs pair with modern TVs may impact its success.
The $100 Steam Controller also suggests the bundled system will target a more premium market. It’s still unclear whether the Steam Machine and Frame VR headset will ship separately.
