Sony Xperia 1 VI tipped to ditch signature front panel in favor of 2024 conformity

Sony's Xperia smartphones occupy a specific niche as one of the very few 21:9 aspect ratio devices in the Android world. However, their days as unusually tall, narrow handsets are numbered, according to a new leak. The upcoming 1 VI flagship is rumored to keep the typical Xperia camera hump, yet may launch as something more like a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in terms of footprint nonetheless.

Android smartphones of a non-standard design might be refreshing in theory, but often get punished or even extinguished in practice, as Sony has reportedly finally concluded. Its Xperia 1 flagship series' reign as the international market's main source of 4K/21:9 displays is apparently over as of 2024.

The upcoming 1 V successor will switch to a much more conventional 2K+ resolution as well as the same 19.5:9 spec as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. It may look much the same from the back; nevertheless, those changes, according to the leaker zackbuks on Weibo, will result in a markedly wider, shorter Sony flagship this year.

The Xperia 1 VI is also tipped to launch as Sony's inaugural anti-AI photography, triple 48MP, pinhole selfie camera flagship smartphone. Nevertheless, it is also now tipped to leave any significant departure from the traditional super-sized slab look to the foldables in 2024.
