There have been reports of Sonos developing a streaming device. New info has now surfaced revealing that Sonos has cancelled its plans to release the streaming device which would have been the first product under a new hardware category just like the Ace headphones .
The cancellation of the device codenamed Pinewood
was announced during an all-hands call. Reported to be far gone in terms of development and with months in beta testing, according to a report by The Verge, the team behind the streaming device will be reassigned to other projects.
The streaming device which was reported to cost between $200 to $400, would run Android and consolidate content from various platforms under a single umbrella. It would also have support for universal search, Wi-Fi 7, and an ethernet port.
With the cancellation of the streaming device which was originally projected to be released in January 2025, Sonos doesn't seem to have a major product scheduled for release this year. There has also been no news of the rumored new pair of premium headphones.
The cancellation of the streaming device is the latest in the strings of major happenings at Sonos this year. The company's CEO, Patrick Spence, resigned in early January and was replaced by an interim, Tom Conrad. A few weeks later, it was reported that the company's chief commercial officer, Deirdre Findlay, was planning to leave. Shortly after that, Sonos laid off over 200 employees in early February and also announced that its marketing officer, Jordan Saxemard, would be departing.
