A strange global "casting" outage seems to be affecting second-generation Chromecast devices, including Chromecast Audio. The issue was first reported on Reddit, gaining traction on r/googlehome, where several users said they couldn't cast any content using their devices.
Users reported (via Android Police) trying several troubleshooting steps, including device resets, but nothing has worked. This could, theoretically, be due to a bad update that Google might have pushed. The users reported seeing one of two messages, either "We couldn't authenticate your Chromecast" or "Untrusted device: [device name] couldn't be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware."
While Google works on fixing the issue, there are two reported workarounds on Reddit. User reading_crows on r/googlehome said they got their device to work by resetting it and manually setting the date before March 9th, 2025. This should allow you to add your device back using the Google Home app.
The second workaround is a little more involved and requires downloading a tool and editing some settings. While Google hasn't acknowledged the outage publicly yet, the company's customer support told one user that Google was "aware of the problem and waiting for a fix."
One Reddit user has theorized the issue is being caused by "an intermediate certificate authority that expired March 9th, 2025." This causes authentication failure on Google's servers for second-generation Chromecast devices. It was "likely an unintentional mistake by Google where they failed to account for the CA expiry."
