Last week, many users reported issues casting content with second-generation Chromecast devices, including Chromecast Audio. Google is now rolling out a fix for the problem.
In an email sent to affected users, Google said they "sincerely apologize" for the issues and that the devices "should now function normally." If you haven't reset your device, it should automatically be updated to the latest firmware and start working.
One of the workarounds to get the devices working again involved resetting the device and manually changing the date to before March 9th. If you reset the device for this workaround, Google recommends updating your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) and setting up your devices again.
You can check the firmware versions of your devices to ensure you have the latest update. For Chromecast, the new firmware should be version 1.56.467165, and version 1.56.467166 for Chromecast audio. To check the firmware version of your device, open up your Google Home app, tap and hold on your device's name, and then select settings>device information. You should be able to find it in "Technical Information."
Google says the Home app update and the new firmware are beginning to trickle out to users worldwide, though you may need to wait a few days before it reaches you. While Google hasn't officially confirmed the problem, Reddit users theorized it had something to do with an "intermediate certificate authority that expired on March 9th, 2025."
It caused the devices to fail authentication checks on Google's servers and was "likely an unintentional mistake by Google where they failed to account for CA expiry."
