Google has discontinued the sale of the Chromecast with Google TV streaming devices from its online store, leaving the Google TV Streamer as the only streaming device sold by the tech giant.
Google first announced the Chromecast with Google TV in 2020 as a 4K streaming dongle that ran a new version of Android TV called Google TV. Priced at $49.99, it was available in different colors with matching voice remotes.
Two years later, it launched a cheaper model that was only capable of streaming at a max resolution of 1080p. This model was dubbed the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) and sold for $29.99. It had the same design as the 4K version but was only available in a single color.
Last year, Google announced the Google TV Streamer, a $100 streaming device that ditched the dongle design of the Chromecast with Google TV. The 4K streaming device, which can be placed on a TV shelf like the Apple TV 4K, solved many of the issues folks had with the Chromecast with Google TV series such as ample storage (32GB vs 8GB), more RAM, and a faster processor.
There's also an ethernet port for a wired internet connection and it works as a smart home hub as it has a Thread border router built-in and support for Matter. It has a similar remote to the Chromecast with Google TV and is available in two colors.
Not a lot of people will miss the Chromecast with Google TV streamers as there is no shortage of streaming devices available on the market with options from Amazon, Roku, and Walmart's Onn. And if you are looking for an inexpensive 4K streamer that runs Android TV, Amazon has one on sale right now.
The TiVo Stream 4K is a streaming device with a dongle-like design, and as the name says, it is capable of streaming in 4K. Announced in 2020 as a rival to the Chromecast with Google TV, it cost $49.99 at launch, but for a limited time, you can pick it up for just $24.99 on Amazon. While that is 50% off its launch price, it is actually 38% off its list price of $39.99 on Amazon.
It runs Android TV and not the newer Google TV, has 2GB of RAM and a measly 8GB of storage but more storage can be added via the USB-C port. The USB-C port can also be used to add an ethernet adapter. It has a voice remote with dedicated buttons for Netflix, Live TV, and Google Assistant, and the remote can also be used to control your TV's power, volume, and input via HDMI CEC.
