The Pixel Tablet is now available without Google services, which is supposed to protect users’ privacy and personal data. To be more precise, Murena is relaunching the Pixel Tablet with its own Android-based /e/OS.

Murena is known for its privacy-focused smartphones, but now the company that has developed the open-source operating system /e/OS has launched its own version of the Google Pixel Tablet. This means that users don't have to manually install the alternative operating system.

Rather unsurprisingly, the technical specifications remain unchanged from the original. The Pixel Tablet still sports a 10.95-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels and the Google Tensor G2 chipset, which is coupled with 8GB RAM and 128GB mass storage in Murena’s refurbished model variant. Furthermore, there is an 8MP f/2.0 camera with a 1/4 inch sensor both on the front and rear. The Android tablet is equipped with a 7,020mAh battery, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, but no cellular modem.

Murena’s tablet runs on the Android 13-based /e/OS right out of the box. The system includes numerous open-source apps, including a web browser, email and camera apps as well as a calendar. Since the operating system is based on Android, it should be compatible with most Android apps. However, the Google Play Store and other Google services are not pre-installed. Most importantly, the OS was heavily customized in order to prevent personal data from being transmitted to Google’s servers. More detailed information on /e/OS can be found on the E Foundation website.

Price and availability

Murena's Pixel Tablet is now available for $549 at the company’s official online store. This price does not include shipping fees. For comparison, the regular Pixel Tablet base model is currently available for $299 on Amazon and the official Pixel Store, so privacy-conscious users will have to pay a premium in order to keep their data safe.
