High-end models of Huawei’s latest flagship series, the Pura 70, officially went on sale in China on Thursday and the devices are selling like hotcakes. Reports indicate that the Huawei P70 Pro/Pro+ and the P70 Ultra sold out online within an incredibly short time. TechInsight has now predicted that the company will move more than 10 million P70 units and take back its spot as the premier smartphone vendor in China.

After numerous leaks and rumors, the latest Huawei P70 series went on sale yesterday in China. The Huawei P70 or Pura 70 series consists of four models:

  • Regular Pura 70 with a 6.6-inch display
  • Pura 70 Pro with a 6.8-inch panel
  • Pura 70 Pro+ which retains the screen size of the 70 Pro but brings some spec bumps
  • Pura 70 Ultra with a 6.8-inch display and a 50 MP 1-inch main shooter

All three phones are powered by the home-grown Kirin 9010 SoC which apparently brings Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 levels of performance.

It now appears that the Huawei Pura 70 smartphones have resonated with fans as the high-end variants, the P70 Pro/Pro+ and P70 Ultra, reportedly sold out in under a minute of the sales going live. People were also seen queuing up at a retail location in large numbers “just to make reservations”, reports South China Morning Post

Owing to this demand, TechInsight predicts that the Pura 70 series will break the 10 million sales figure this year, going up to 10.4 million units worldwide. As a comparison, 2023’s Huawei Mate 60 Pro and P60 smartphones seemingly only accounted for 6.2 million and 1.8 million shipments.

Per TechInsight, Huawei is poised to sell 50+ million smartphones in China in 2024, bringing the company to the top with a 19% market share.

Huawei getting back to the leading position in its home market is a big deal, since the company was practically done for following the US sanctions imposed in 2019. According to figures provided by Statista, Huawei was the biggest smartphone vendor in China in 2019 and 2020 with a market share of 38.3% for both years. However, the company didn’t even place in the top five in 2021 and the number one spot was taken over by Oppo (Buy the Oppo Find N3 Flip on Amazon).

Three years later, it seems that Huawei has finally shrugged off the devastating effects of the US sanctions with predictions of a bright future ahead.

While predictions by reputable analysts can give us a general idea about the current industry trends, we’ll have to wait and see if Huawei actually manages to retake its spot in 2024.
