Since 2019, foldables have been a fixture amongst Android smartphones. As you may know, we are likely still a few years away from Apple releasing a foldable device. However, there might be solid reasons behind Apple’s hesitation. For instance, foldable phones have until now failed to gain widespread adoption – which shouldn't come as a surprise given their high prices.
According to an industry report from South Korea, Samsung foldables released in 2024 haven’t been much of a success, with sales figures dropping drastically. For 2025, the company is anticipating a remarkable slump in demand. Instead of the 8.2 million target for 2024, the company predicts that only 5 million Samsung foldables will be sold in 2025, more specifically 3 million units of the Galaxy Flip7 and 2 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold7, representing an exceptionally sharp decline of around 39%.
On the flip side, sales targets for the Galaxy S25 lineup have been raised by 7%, from 35 million to 37.4 million units. These figures haven’t taken into account the new Galaxy S25 Slim, expected to sell 3 million units. According to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, Chinese foldable makers are also going to hold back a little more in this segment and reduce their sales targets slightly, despite the fact that the likes of Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus and Xiaomi could potentially take market share from Samsung.
