It seems that Powkiddy could be about to re-enter the clamshell gaming handheld space, just as Anbernic releases the RG34XX SP. While a few years have passed since Powkiddy launched the V90, evidence emerged in late March that a possible successor was in development.
Shortly afterwards, Miyoo then refreshed the Flip with a Flip V2 before Anbernic introduced the RG34XX SP as a smaller alternative to the popular RG35XX SP (curr. $76.99 on Amazon). Incidentally, a recent leak suggests that RG34XX SP prototypes were even smaller than retail units.
Now, both Takin Udon and Powkiddy itself have shared teasers online of what was previously known as the Powkiddy V90 V2 or V2.0. Now apparently called the V90S, the new model is said to depart from its predecessor and its peers in a few key areas.
For one, Powkiddy has adopted a dual hinge design, which should ensure greater rigidity than the equivalent found inside the Miyoo Flip. According to Udon, Powkiddy has also redesigned its internal layout to prevent the battery from acting as an unintended heatsink. Nonetheless, the new Powkiddy V90 retains a user-accessible battery compartment, unlike its current peers.
Udon adds that his models exhibit no screen tearing either, which was a problem with the original V90. Although display specifications remain unknown for now, it looks as though Powkiddy has opted for a 4:3 panel rather than a 3:2 equivalent. Either way, this will be joined by the Allwinner A133P that Powkiddy already uses in the V20, as does MagicX and TrimUI in other retro gaming handhelds, to name but a few.
At this stage, other observations include a pair of rear-mounted USB Type-C ports, two sets of small shoulder buttons and the positioning of the device's MicroSD card slot on its left-hand side. At this stage, a firm release date and pricing are unclear. With Udon claiming to have received retail units, we suspect Powkiddy will officially unveil the V90S sooner rather than later.
