Nubia launches the Red Magic 5G in China
Nubia has finally unleashed the Red Magic 5G, which can now be called 2020's first phone with the long-touted spec of a 144Hz refresh rate in its display. It is now likely to draw comparisons with the Black Shark 3 series that has also recently leaped into its gaming-focused category.
However, this latest contender can distinguish itself with its new screen tech, which is also likely to exceed that of every other flagship phone to launch in at least this half of the year. In addition, the sub-brand's unique spinning fan makes a return in this generation. It is combined with a heat-sink in this inaugural 5G variant, which may help deal with the demands of gameplay or charging, which, as it turns out, goes at a rate of 55 watts (W).
The Red Magic 5G's AMOLED panel has an FHD+ resolution (an area where the Black Shark 3 Pro does have the edge) and is 6.65 inches in length. It features a 240Hz touch-sampling rate (which is, again, slightly pipped by the new Xiaomi alternatives), and also has capacitive shoulder triggers, in which the same applicable rate shoots up to 300Hz.
The '5G's battery has a 4500mAh capacity - hopefully Nubia's choice of screen quality will help it last the course. Its rear cameras have increased to 3 compared to last year's 1 (as rumored), although their housing retains the hexagonal esthetic of the Red Magic 3 series. The main shooter is a 64MP Sony IMX sensor, which is joined by 8 and 2MP lenses for ultra-wide and macro duty respectively.
The Red Magic 5G's chassis has a wildly different look compared to last year: its back features a vague X, partially picked out by inward-facing triangle accents. They were shown in contrasting colors on the phone's TENAA certification: this option is called Cyber Neon. There is also a Black colorway, (for which the accents are also this color) and Mars Red (in which they are gold).
Furthermore, there is also a Transparent Edition of this new phone, although it cannot be said if its effect is genuine yet. These finishes can be paired to a 16GB RAM top-end variant, which also has 256GB of internal storage. These options are now available to pre-order for 4999 yuan (~US$712) for the first 3 styles, or 5199 (~$740) for the Transparent limited-edition model.
The Red Magic 5G also has 8 and 12GB RAM options, which are priced at 3799 (~$540) and 4099 yuan (~$585) respectively for 128GB internal storage SKUs. Finally, the phone's 12/256GB SKUs go for 4399 yuan (~$625), or 200 more (~$30) for its own Transparent version.
These prices are for the Chinese market only at present. However, Nubia has also stated that international customers may only have to wait until April 2020 for a more global launch of this new Red Magic 5G.
