Nubia RedMagic 5G international pre-orders and public release announced
International customers that wanted the new Nubia RedMagic 5G (successor to the Redmagic 3), but weren't willing to deal with the warranty and import issues associated with purchasing the Chinese model, now have official release timing and pricing.
The RedMagic 5G is suitably spec'd for a gaming phone, with a Snapdragon 865 SoC, 8/12 GB LPDDR5 RAM, and 128/256 GB UFS3.0 storage. This implementation of LPDDR5 provides roughly 50% higher memory bandwidth compared to LPDDR4X.
The display is a 6.65-inch AMOLED panel with a 144 Hz refresh rate, and we would expect the response times to be respectable too. The touch response polls at 240 Hz, which should result in a slight reduction in perceived lag since inputs can be registered between visual screen refresh as well as during screen refresh. The shoulder trigger "pads" have been increased to a 300 Hz touch refresh rate.
The battery is a little small for such a large phone at 4500 mAh, but this is likely due to the space required for the active cooling fan. RedMagic has included a right angle charging cable to make it a little less awkward to use the phone in landscape orientation while plugged in.
The primary camera uses a 64 MP Sony IMX686 sensor, and there is an 8 MP sensor under the wide-angle lens and a 2 MP sensor for measuring depth in bokeh/portrait shots.
RedMagic is running a "blueprint event" where each day between 14 – 21 April, users can buy a "Blueprint" (pre-order) for US$5.75, which guarantees you the opportunity to purchase the RedMagic 5G on the first day of sales. It also gives you "up to $50" off the price of the device. This is a pretty strange concept, and a flat-rate discount probably would have been a better option for consumers.
