Notebookcheck's Top Windows Alternatives to the MacBook 12 and Air 13

Florian Wimmer (translated by Andreas Osthoff), 07/03/2017

July 2018 Update. Lighter than Air? Apple shocked the whole industry with the first MacBook Air: We had never seen such a slim and light notebook before. However, in the meantime the other manufacturers have come up with several slim Windows devices that are good alternatives to the current MacBooks.

The following article considers the current notebook series from Apple and tries to find the five best currently available Windows alternatives reviewed by Notebookcheck for each. We have restricted them by size, weight, resolution, hardware, and price. Depending on individual weighting, the order in the lists might be different or unmentioned devices might get a chance. Also note the following top lists:

The following table shows possible Windows based MacBook competitors tested on Notebookcheck in the last 12 months. With the same rating, younger tests are ranked first. The table can be sorted by clicking on the headings or restricted with the text filter (eg matte).

1st - Dell Latitude 7390

Dell Latitude 7390
Dell Latitude 7390

In our review of Dell's business laptop we say: "Only a few laptops impressed us as much as the Dell Latitude 7390". Thanks to an anti-glare (!) touchscreen, really long battery runtimes, great port selection, and the low weight, this statement is justified. It does not have to be the model with the Core i7; you can save money with the Core i5 and the performance is still superior to the Apple MacBook Air 13.

However, it comes at a price: Compared to the MacBook Air 13, which is actually pretty cheap right now, the Dell Latitude 7390 can easily cost twice as much depending on the configuration, but you also get much more modern components.

2nd - Microsoft Surface Pro

Microsoft Surface Pro
Microsoft Surface Pro

Microsoft has won many fans with the Surface tablets and the Pro variant is popular among the business community. The latest variant is simply called Surface Pro without number again. Without a USB-C port, it almost appears a bit outdated. It has this property in common with the MacBook Air 13 (2017), which can no longer compete with the MacBook Pro 13 and has a significantly smaller and thinner brother in the MacBook.

However, we want to write about the Microsoft Surface Pro (2017) here, which proves to be a worthy competitor to Apple's MacBook Air 13: even longer battery runtimes than the predecessor, a bright display, and quite suitable for video telephony, thanks to a good camera and microphone. In addition, the convertible is completely silent and looks good. However, the performance throttles heavily under prolonged load. The tablet only turns into a real convertible with the Signature Type Cover for a surcharge and the price is already quite steep without accessories.

3rd - Fujitsu LifeBook U938

Fujitsu LifeBook U938
Fujitsu LifeBook U938

Again without an illuminated keyboard? We have already criticized in the review of the predecessor of the Fujitsu LifeBook U938. You also have to live with the high-pitched fan and the slightly wobbly display lid. This might not sound like a serious rival for the MacBook Air 13 at first, but Fujitsu's subnotebook can easily compensate these drawbacks thanks to a weight of less than 1 kg (~2.2 lb), long battery runtimes, good screen, and the easy maintenance. However, it is also much more expensive than Apple's slightly outdated MacBook Air 13.

The Dell Latitude 5290 2-in-1 follows the concept of the Surface Pro: A powerful tablet in the first place, which can be transformed into a full-fledged laptop replacement thanks to a high-quality keyboard cover. Even the maintenance of Dell's business convertible is pretty simple and it is usually very quiet in practice.

The battery runtime is not as convincing and the price is also higher compared to some of the rivals in this ranking. You do not get a Thunderbolt port, but a good screen and many security features in return.

5th – Dell XPS 13

Dell XPS 13
Dell XPS 13

Thanks to its small dimensions and light weight, not only is the Dell XPS 13  a suitable rival for the Apple MacBook Pro 13, but also for the MacBook Air 13. This year, the aging subnotebook has finally received a new case. Build quality is as high as expected, and while the case is ever so slightly thinner than the old one it is not as rigid anymore. The major downside of this year’s model is that all SKUs now feature a reflective display so there is no way getting around that anymore. We would have also preferred a bigger selection of ports and a better webcam. In return, the input devices were solid, battery life was long, and the device remained almost completely silent in everyday use. As such, the XPS 13 remains a strong contender to the MacBook Air 13.

Top 5 Windows alternatives to the Apple MacBook 12

Since the MacBook Air 11 has been discontinued, the slim and light MacBook 12  is the smallest laptop of Apple's line-up. It quite radically omits almost all interfaces. This trend continues in Ultrabooks with Windows.

We made an interesting observation when we looked for alternatives to Apple's smallest notebooks. There are just no similarly high quality notebooks smaller than 12 inches. Many suitable devices such as the Sony Vaio Pro 11, the Dell XPS 11 or the Vaio Tap 11 are not available anymore. This means that there is no longer an 11-inch device in this Top 5; all the devices have screens with 12 or 12.5 inches. Apple follows this trend as well and does not continue the MacBook Air 11; the MacBook 12 is the smallest model from now on.

What does a notebook have to bring in order to keep up with the small MacBooks? It needs high performance, a great display, a high-end keyboard and a stylish case. The HP EliteBook Folio G1 offers all these, a fast Wi-Fi as well as an infrared camera for signing in via face recognition. However, as in all small and slim notebooks you have to accept limited connectivity and the processor throttles under full load.

Overall, the fanless design is great for quiet environments and the optional docking station might be another reason for buying the HP EliteBook Folio G1.

HP's Elite x2 1012 G2 is a nice convertible, which is primarily designed for business users. The fast Core i5 processor and the generous scope of delivery including great keyboard dock and input pen are big advantages.

We also like the fast M.2 SSD, sufficient runtimes of around 6 hours, as well as the bright IPS screen with wide color gamut. We don't think the more expensive i7 version is worth it, since the additional performance will most likely be lost due to the limited cooling capabilities. Our test model also had pretty warm surfaces under load.

Samsung is also slowly approaching the western notebook market again. The Samsung Galaxy Book 12 is a direct competitor to Microsoft's Surface Pro and can also be a threat to the MacBook 12. There are hardly any complaints thanks to a premium, and simple design, high-end build quality, fast LTE connectivity, good input devices, good display, and long battery life. At most, you can criticize it for throttling under prolonged load and slightly too high temperatures. Otherwise, it is a worthy contender for about 1500 Euros (~$1789).
