The Best Windows Alternatives to Apple's MacBook Air

October 2020 Update. Apple’s MacBook Air is a favorite among all users looking for a small-format laptop. However, thin and light is not an Apple-exclusive any longer, and many OEMs offer numerous viable Windows alternatives to Apple’s thin MacBook Air.
Florian Schmitt (translated by Finn D. Boerne),
MacBook Air 2020

The table above contains an overview over the best notebooks reviewed by Notebookcheck over the course of the past 12 months as well as still relevant and available older products. In cases of identical score the more recent device is listed first. All prices in above table and price comparisons are updated daily and can thus differ.
Link: Link: all devices in this class reviewed

1st – Lenovo ThinkPad X13

Lenovo ThinkPad X13
Lenovo ThinkPad X13

The small Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 with AMD Ryzen 4000 is a very fast premium notebook with strengths and weaknesses very similar to those of the ThinkPad T14s, compared to which it has a smaller display, keyboard, and case as well as a shorter battery life.

In addition, the ThinkPad X13 cannot quite keep up in terms of performance. In return, its keyboard is easily swappable whereas the T14s’s is part of the case.

Compared to the MacBook Air the ThinkPad offers a better connectivity, more safety features, a quiet and cool mode of operation, excellent input devices, and a good display.

2nd – Dell Latitude 7310

Dell Latitude 7310
Dell Latitude 7310

If you’re in the market for a compact notebook capable of competing against the MacBook Air you may want to take a closer look at the Latitude 7310. Compared to its predecessor, Dell further optimized its size and weight thereby creating a true high-end subnotebook. You can save even more weight by going with the optional carbon-fiber case.

In return, you have to make do with a somewhat spongy clickpad instead of a mousepad with dedicated mouse buttons. RAM cannot be expended, and the display could be brighter.

Those things aside the device does offer a lot: long battery life, quiet fan noise, no PWM flickering, and numerous safety features.

3rd – Dell XPS 13 9300

Dell XPS 13 9300
Dell XPS 13 9300

Dell’s XPS 13 9300 offers a 16:10 display and an up-to-date Intel Ice Lake CPU including Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 GPU. As such, the compact convertible is a true jack of all trades, although gaming should definitely not be at the top of your list. The Dell XPS 13 9300 became much more attractive this year, particularly thanks to its design and the 16:10 display.

If you don’t depend on macOS the XPS 13 9300 can be a very tempting alternative as it offers a multitude of qualities, such as its low noise emissions, its small footprint, its flexible charging options, its long battery life and its bright display. Not all that glitters is gold, though, and the flip side are missing HDMI and USB-A ports, and an overall worse selection of ports than on previous models. Professionals might not be particularly impressed by the limited connectivity, but at least Dell continues to equip its XPS 13 with a microSD card reader.

4th – Lenovo ThinkPad T14s

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s
Lenovo ThinkPad T14s

The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s is the first model featuring Lenovo’s new model naming convention, and despite its different moniker it is the successor to last year’s T490s.

As before, you get a great business notebook with a slim, robust, a premium case, a good display, great input devices, long battery life, and low noise emissions. The new model features Wi-Fi 6, which is expected of premium notebook such as this.

Even though our final verdict on the AMD SKU is not in yet we definitely suggest opting for that one instead of the Intel model. Our first impressions of the AMD-powered model already showed a significant improvement in performance at the cost of the Thunderbolt 3 port that is only available on Intel SKUs.

5th – Lenovo ThinkPad X395

Lenovo ThinkPad X395
Lenovo ThinkPad X395

The AMD-powered version of Lenovo’s high-quality subnotebook is a great choice. It remains quiet and cool at all times, it is very efficient, and offers a high level of graphics performance to boot. Unfortunately and annoyingly, it lacks a Thunderbolt 3 port. Thanks to its plethora of security features, its bright high-contrast display, and 3 years of warranty it performed very well in our review either way and managed to secure a place in our top 10 lists.

The ThinkPad X395 might have a few drawbacks, such as for example the hard to reach microSD slot of the CPU’s extensive thermal throttling, but it is overall a very good alternative to the MacBook Air.

6th – HP EliteBook 830 G7

HP EliteBook 830 G7
HP EliteBook 830 G7

HP improved upon its latest EliteBook 830 significantly. Among others it features a better and well-designed chassis, a comfortable keyboard, a variety of easily upgradeable components, and decent sound quality. Some details make everyday work so much more convenient, such as for example charging via USB-C of the webcam shutter.

In return, CPU performance is in need of improvement, and the list of options is fairly short. No 4K display, no eSIM, no SD card reader, and no Intel Iris graphics option either. Flexibility and configurability could have been better.

Pricecompare

7th – HP Spectre x360 13

HP Spectre x360 13
HP Spectre x360 13

Compared to its own predecessor, the HP Spectre x360’s case is slightly smaller, and the display is slightly brighter. Accordingly, it is one of the best high-end convertibles and offers more flexibility than the MacBook Air.

A high-quality case, a comfortable keyboard, a full-sized USB port, a fast card reader, and a battery life of more than 10 hours in our Wi-Fi test are other benefits.

On the downside we noted slow response times, the lack of HDMI connectivity, and poor upgradeability.

8th – Microsoft Surface Pro 7

Microsoft Surface Pro 7
Microsoft Surface Pro 7

If you already own a Surface Pro 5 or Surface Pro 6 there really isn’t any convincing reason for you to upgrade to the Surface Pro 7 as it contains minor improvements and is more of an evolutionary step rather than a revolutionary redesign. CPU performance, for example, remained practically identical. However, optional extra GPU performance is now available, as is a USB-C port.

That said the Surface Pro 7’s predecessors already performed at a very high level in many aspects, and the Pro 7 follows in their footsteps. By default it comes with Wi-Fi 6 now, features a fast SSD, and it is passively cooled and this completely silent. The Surface Pro 7 remains one of the best Windows tablets available, and thanks to a variety of great third-party keyboards it can be a worthy alternative to Apple’s MacBook Air.

9th – Acer Spin 5 SP513

Acer Spin 5 SP513
Acer Spin 5 SP513

The Acer Spin 5’s unique selling point is without a doubt its great price-performance ratio. The Ice Lake SoC offers solid performance even though it had to throttle under load. Fortunately, the Spin 5 remained quiet and cool during everyday use. Build quality is excellent, and so is choice of material. The aluminum case was robust but significantly deeper than on most of its competitors.

Avid typists will find the keyboard to be suiting, and creative users will benefit from the convertible form factor and the integrated stylus. The display was also okay. However, if you are sensitive to PWM you should look elsewhere as the Spin 5’s PWM frequency was comparatively low and might cause issues in sensitive users.

10th – Asus ZenBook 13

Asus ZenBook 13
Asus ZenBook 13

Even lighter than the MacBook Air? Enter the Asus ZenBook 13. At just 1,100 g it still manages to offer long battery life and low heat emissions. The clickpad may not be ideal for frequent use but at least it offers a virtual numpad, which is without a doubt a unique and interesting feature. Wi-Fi was excellent, and the devices comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

If we had to nitpick, we would have to say that the case could have been a bit sturdier. The Asus ZenBook 13 Is a great and lighter alternative to the MacBook Air.
