Lenovo launches new compact gaming tablet with more memory than its global counterpart

Lenovo's latest compact gaming tablet has taken a rather unusual route to market. To recap, the device was first teased in China as the Legion Y700 Gen 5. However, it was then launched globally as the Legion Tab Gen 5 before fully debuting in China. Last week, the company released the Legion Tab Gen 5 across Europe, including the UK.
Now, Lenovo has launched the Legion Y700 Gen 5 in China alongside new Xiaoxin tablets. The Legion Y700 Gen 5 and Legion Tab Gen 5 are identical on the face of it. For instance, both tablets feature 9,000 mAh batteries and the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset found in modern flagships like the OnePlus 15 and the RedMagic 11 Pro (curr. $799 on Amazon). Likewise, both tablets contain identical 8.8-inch, 3,040 x 1,904-pixel and 165 Hz displays with 98% DCI-P3 colour space coverage and 750 nits peak brightness.

Currently, Lenovo sells the Legion Tab Gen 5 with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The company indicated that variants with up to 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage would be available, though. If the Legion Y700 Gen 5 is anything to go by, this will take the form of a solitary 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage configuration. For reference, this memory configuration costs around 18% more than the equivalent 12 GB RAM/256 GB configuration in China.
Additionally, the Legion Y700 Gen 5 can be configured with 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Priced at CNY 6,399 (~$930), this version appears to have passed the Legion Tab Gen 5 by. Unfortunately, Lenovo has not clarified why only the Legion Y700 Gen 5 is available with this more versatile memory configuration. At this stage, it is unclear whether Lenovo's new Legion Y700 accessories will be sold globally, either.
