Leak: HMD Fusion 2 is still in development, alongside HMD XR22 rugged smartphone

Following an earlier report that HMD was terminating the modular Fusion smartphone line, new info has surfaced that says otherwise. The source is the same one that reported the Fusion line has been shut down, although there was a caveat that said the report wasn't confirmed.

Citing an insider who is a friend as the source of the new information, the X account smashx_60, says the next-gen HMD Fusion is still in the development phase, which means HMD hasn't cancelled the phone. The post also said that the design of the Fusion 2 hasn't been finalized, so any images or data circulating are fake.

In a separate post, smashx_60 reiterated that the HMD Fusion 2 is still in development, but also mentions the fate of some other models. The info, which is said to have been confirmed by insiders, says there's no HMD Skyline 2 GT smartphone nor does the upcoming HMD Skyline 2 have a redesigned (read circular) camera island.

The post also mentioned that the successor to the HMD XR21 rugged smartphone (available on Amazon for $439.99), which is expected to launch as the HMD XR22 is also in development. Like the HMD Skyline, the HMD XR21 was released in 2024, even though it is a rebadge of the Nokia XR21 released in 2023; so it is overdue for a successor.

There's still no news yet about when HMD plans to release these new smartphones. Lately, the Finnish company has turned its focus to feature phones with new models such as the new AI-infused Nokia 2xx series.
