HMD's modular smartphone rumored to be discontinued

In 2024, the HMD Fusion launched as a modular smartphone with an interchangeable back cover called Fusion Outfits. These Fusion Outfits add different features to the phone such as a game controller, a camera light ring, wireless charging, and better protection. While a successor seems due, an unconfirmed report says that might never happen.
The info comes from the popular X account, HMD_Meme (@smashx_60), known for posting news about HMD and Nokia-branded devices. According to a recent post, HMD might discontinue the Fusion project. The post says that the reasons cited are high production costs and profitability, but adds a disclaimer that the news is yet to be confirmed. Support for the existing model is reported to continue as promised.
This news comes as a surprise as the last we heard of the HMD Fusion was that a successor was in development. This successor, expected to launch as the HMD Fusion 2 was reported to pack key upgrades such as a 120Hz FHD+ display, a more powerful Snapdragon processor, an upgraded dual rear camera setup, and a higher ingress protection rating.
It was also reported that the HMD Fusion 2 will get a new generation of Fusion Outfits that includes a projector, a speaker, and a camera grip, all of which sound exciting and reminiscent of the Moto Mods for the Moto Z series. Now, it seems these accessories and the phone itself may never see the light of day.
We are not privy to the BOM for the HMD Fusion (curr. available on Amazon for $262.54), but considering RAM and storage have gotten more expensive, the higher cost of production is definitely a valid reason. In addition, the smartphone space is a very competitive one, and despite the appeal of a modular smartphone, if it doesn't sell well, then it makes sense to shift your focus to the more profitable models.
Notwithstanding, until an official announcement surfaces, it is advised that the news is taken with a grain of salt.
