A new render suggests Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold will receive only a minimal visual refresh. However, the foldable could deliver more meaningful upgrades internally through the Tensor G6 chipset.

Newly surfaced renders from Mysticleaks on Telegram have offered another look at Google's upcoming Pixel 11 Pro Fold, internally codenamed Yogi (9YI4). It shows the foldable's Pine colourway. Furthermore, it is shaping up to receive a marginally small design revision. At first glance, it is virtually indistinguishable from its predecessor, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Upon closer inspection, one can see a marginal change, something that was also revealed by an earlier leak

The most noticeable tweak is the relocation of the LED flash, which has moved from the lower camera housing to the upper pill-shaped cutout beside what appears to be the telephoto sensor. Otherwise, the three rear cameras retain their familiar arrangement, with the overall camera island, rounded corners, matte rear panel and polished frame remaining identical. Even the proportions of the camera bump appear nearly identical to those of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Google's current foldable design is already among the cleaner-looking options on the market, but anyone hoping for a more ambitious redesign may be left disappointed.

As far as the actual camera hardware is concerned, not much is known about the Pixel 11 Pro Fold or the entire Pixel 11 lineup in general. Ideally, more information should emerge as its August 12 launch date approaches. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold was widely criticised for its puzzling camera setup that had little in common with its non-Pro or even Pro-branded counterparts, and one can only hope that Google uses better sensors in its cutting-edge foldable smartphone.

The Tensor G6 could make up for the lack of visible design changes

While the Pixel 11 Pro Fold may not look dramatically different from its predecessor, the Tensor G6 powering it could be a more substantial upgrade. Rumours indicate that Google will equip the device with its next-generation Tensor G6 chipset, which is expected to be manufactured on TSMC's 2 nm-class N2 process instead of the previously rumoured N3 node. If accurate, the move could bring noticeable gains in both performance and power efficiency while making the Tensor G6 one of the first smartphone SoCs manufactured on TSMC's N2 process.

That would give Google an early transition from FinFET to GAAFET transistor technology, whereas rival flagship smartphone chipsets, such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Dimensity 9500, are on the more mature N3P node Additionally, a transition to a MediaTek modem may also improve battery life, cellular connectivity and thermal efficiency, something that was problematic in the era of Exynos modems. But, will that be enough?

The apparent lack of structural changes is concerning for an entirely different reason. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold's disappointing showing in JerryRigEverything's durability test raised concerns about its structural stability. And if that wasn't bad enough, the damaged battery subsequently ignited. While it remains to be seen whether Google has reinforced the Pixel 11 Pro Fold internally, the newly surfaced renders do not suggest any obvious redesign of the hinge area or chassis that would indicate the company has addressed one of the most concerning criticisms of its foldable lineup.
