It has been over a year since the HMD Fusion was announced as a budget modular smartphone. It even got two special editions at MWC 2025 earlier this year, one of which is the Fusion X1 which is designed for kids. News of a successor, rumored to be called the HMD Fusion 2, first surfaced in April. Now, the same source has provided some of the key specs of the upcoming smartphone.
The HMD Fusion 2 will arrive with key upgrades over the first generation based on a post on X by HMD_MEME'S (@smashx_60), the leaker known for revealing details about upcoming HMD devices.
According to the source, the HMD Fusion 2 will have a 6.58-inch OLED display with an FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. This is a significant upgrade when compared to the 2024 HMD Fusion which has a 6.56-inch IPS panel with an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate.
HMD will also replace the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 of last year's model with the newly announced Snapdragon 6s Gen 4. Unfortunately, no details were provided about the RAM and storage configurations that the HMD Fusion 2 will be available in.
The HMD Fusion 2 will have two rear cameras — a 108MP primary rear camera like that of its predecessor, but an 8MP ultrawide angle camera that replaces the 2MP depth sensor of the HMD Fusion. The leak didn't reveal the resolution of the front-facing camera.
However, the source revealed that the HMD Fusion 2 will have an IP65 dust and water resistance rating which is a notable improvement from the IP54 rating of the HMD Fusion. It will also have NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, dual speakers, an audio jack, Pogo Pin 2.0, and a second generation of Smart Outfits a.k.a modular accessories.
We do not know if the new POGO pins will look like that of the original or like the ones on the HMD Lvalo XE 5G. The design and position of the POGO pins will determine if the new Smart Outfits will be compatible with the previous generation. There's also no mention of the battery capacity and charging speed.
Nevertheless, the HMD Fusion 2 is shaping up to be a much better device than its predecessor. In addition, some of its features also beat those of its closest rival — the CMF Phone 2 Pro. For example, the HMD Fusion 2 is said to have an IP65 rating whereas the CMF Phone 2 Pro (available on Amazon.de for €245.29) has an IP54 rating. The Fusion 2 should also be sharper since its screen is smaller than that of the CMF Phone 2 Pro.
